PULLMAN, Wash. – Sabrina Haines scored 15 of her game-high 17 points in the second half to help lead the No. 23 Arizona State women's basketball team to a 61-58 win over Washington State on Friday night.
Quinn Dornstauder posted her fourth double-double of the season (12 points, 11 rebounds) while Robbi Ryan added 10 points for the Sun Devils (16-8, 7-6 Pac-12), who remained in sole possession of fifth place in the Pac-12, one game ahead of Oregon (16-9, 6-7).
Also contributing solid outings for the Sun Devils were Sophie Brunner and Kiara Russell, who scored eight points each, and Kianna Ibis, who collected a career-high eight rebounds to go with two points and two steals.
Alexys Swedlund led Washington State (10-14, 5-8) with 14 points.
Down by three at the half, Dornstauder came out and personally outscored the Cougars 7-2 over the first 1:49 of the third quarter to give ASU its first lead, 34-32, after a layup with 8:10 remaining.
The Cougars would eventually go back up by five before the Sun Devils used another 7-0 run – this one comprised of five points from Haines and two from Sydney Goodson – over the last 2:36 to take a 45-43 lead into the final period.
Haines (10 points) and Brunner (six points) combined for all of ASU's offense in the fourth quarter as both players came through time and again. Neither team led by more than three points in the final 10 minutes setting the stage for a down-to-the-wire finish.
After the Cougars took a one-point lead with 4:31 remaining both teams suddenly had trouble generating offense. Brunner would break the drought with a layup with 2:05 remaining and, after a defensive stop, Haines connected on a jumper to put ASU up 59-56 with 70 seconds left.
The Cougars would hit two free throws to get within one with 46 seconds left, but, after forcing a Sun Devil miss, were not able to get the rebound. Ryan came up with the offensive carom for the Sun Devils and passed to Haines, who was immediately fouled. Haines hit both free throws to once again extend ASU's lead to three, 61-58 with 14 seconds left. ASU would hold on the opposite and clinch its second straight win.
For Haines, who scored a career-high 19 points in last year's win at Washington State, it was the second time in as many games that the sophomore guard came up with a big fourth-quarter performance. In ASU's 68-63 win over Oregon last Sunday, Haines scored a team-high six points in the final quarter. Combined with Friday's performance at WSU, Haines has combined for 16 points and knocked down all four of her 3-pointers in the fourth quarter of the last two games.
Russell scored four points to lead ASU in the first quarter as seven different Sun Devils accounted for points in the first 10 minutes. Washington State led by as many as three and would eventually take a 17-15 lead into the second quarter.
The Sun Devils got off to a slow start in the second period. Ryan's jumper with 5:03 remaining in the first half snapped a 9-0 run by the Cougars, who led by as many as nine twice in the quarter. Ryan would go on to score eight of ASU's 12 points in the second quarter in helping the Sun Devils cut the Cougars' lead to 30-27 at the half.
ASU was once again without senior guard Kelsey Moos who has missed the last 11 games since suffering a foot injury in a win over Cal on New Year's Day. Her status is being evaluated on a game-by-game basis.
The Sun Devils close out their road trip to the state of Washington on Sunday (5 p.m. PT/6 p.m. MT) when they play at No. 10 Washington. Sunday's game can be seen on Pac-12 Network/Arizona/Washington and heard live on NBC Sports Radio AM 1060.
