BOULDER, Colo. – Quinn Dornstauder posted her second double-double in three games (13 points, career-high 12 rebounds) to help lead the No. 19 Arizona State women's basketball team to a 71-52 win at Colorado on Sunday.
Sophie Brunner scored a team-high 16 points while Reili Richardson tied her career high in scoring with 14 points to help the Sun Devils (12-3, 3-1 Pac-12) post their third straight win and their 10th in 11 games.
The Sun Devils shot 44 percent for the game and connected on 75 percent of their free throws (15-20). After holding Utah 28 points below its scoring average in their win on Friday, the Sun Devils held the Buffaloes (11-4, 1-3 Pac-12) 27 points below their scoring average on Sunday.
As has been the case in all but one of its games this season, the Sun Devils once again dominated the boards as they outrebounded the Buffaloes 49-30, including a plus-six advantage in offensive boards (17-11). ASU would take advantage of the extra opportunities as they nearly doubled up Colorado in second-chance points (20-11). Dornstauder (12), Brunner (eight) and Sabrina Haines (seven) would account for 27 of ASU's 49 rebounds.
After scoring the first nine points in Friday's win at Utah, the Sun Devils got off to another fast start on Sunday as they scored 12 of the first 16 points to take an early eight-point lead, 12-4.
In contrast to the win over Utah, the Buffaloes would come back with eight straight points in the span of 1:29 to even the score at 12-12. The Sun Devils would eventually regain the advantage to claim a 16-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
ASU would take control of the game over the ensuing 20 minutes as it connected on 58 percent (18-31) of its shots in the second and third quarters while limiting Colorado to only 31 percent (9-29) during the same stretch. The Sun Devils would outscore the Buffaloes 41-23 in the game's middle quarters, helping them take a 20-point cushion into the final quarter.
One of the game's important sequences came in the second quarter when the Sun Devils held the Buffaloes without a field goal for nearly five minutes. While Colorado's offense was dormant, the Sun Devils were able to build their lead back up to eight points after a 3-pointer by Sydney Goodson and back-to-back baskets by Brunner. The Sun Devils would take their first double-digit advantage after a 3-pointer by Richardson put ASU up 34-22 with 2:08 remaining. The Buffaloes would score four points in the final minute of the quarter to cut ASU's lead to 36-28 at the half.
Five different Sun Devils – Dornstauder, Richardson, Kianna Ibis, Robbi Ryan and Brunner – scored during a 13-3 run to start the second half. Dornstauder's layup with 5:21 remaining in the third quarter gave ASU a 49-31 lead.
The Sun Devils would eventually lead by as many as 20 on four occasions, the last of which came after two free throws by Ryan with 7:20 left in the fourth quarter.
A 10-2 run by the Buffaloes got them within 13 with 4:29 remaining, but Sabrina Haines would answer by knocking down a triple as the shot clock expired and then converted a 3-point play on consecutive possessions to build ASU's advantage back up to19 with 3:29 left. The Buffaloes would get no closer than 17 the rest of the way.
