PHOENIX – An early deficit turned into a 12-2 loss as Sun Devil Baseball fell to Oregon in the series finale on Sunday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The Ducks (22-19, 10-11) opened the game with five unanswered runs and held a 6-1 lead through the first third of the afternoon. Arizona State tallied six hits in the middle innings, but only drove in one run, and a four-run top of the sixth by UO put the Devils in a 10-2 hole.
The Sun Devils (29-15, 11-10) picked up 10 hits and have double-digit hits in eight of their past 11 games. Infielder David Greer notched his Pac-12 leading 20th double, the most by a Sun Devil since Michael Benjamin had 20 in 2013 and tied for the most since Riccio Torrez’s 27 in 2010. Right fielder Gage Canning led off the bottom of the third with a single to left field to extend his streak of reaching base safely to a team-high 22 games.
ASU used seven pitchers in the series finale and left-hander Reagan Todd went the longest at 3 1/3 innings. He struck out seven, half the batters he faced in his first outing of the weekend, and allowed three runs, including two earned, on one hit and a pair of walks.
UO plated five runs in the first two innings, including three in the first and two in the second. Starting left-hander Zach Dixon (1-0) was replaced with one out and two on in the second inning. He was responsible for five runs on a pair of hits and three walks, and struck out two in his fourth consecutive Sunday start.
Three consecutive singles, including a RBI base hit from left fielder Ryan Lillard, put ASU on the board in the second innings. Greer’s 20th double of the season scored second baseman Jordan Aboites, who opened the fifth with a double, and brought the Devils’ deficit down to four, 6-2.
Oregon plated four runs in the sixth, and added one in both the seventh and eighth innings to stretch its lead to 10, 12-2.
