TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Football redshirt senior Laiu Moeakiola has been named to the watch list for the Lott IMPACT Trophy for the second consecutive season, the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation announced Wednesday.
Moeakiola, one of 42 student-athletes represented on the list, embodies someone who excels in the classroom, on the field and around the community. IMPACT stands for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity, and is awarded to those who have a positive influence both on and off the field.
Moeakiola, who is from Euless, Texas, is a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention and was a 2014 All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention recipient. A 2015 co-captain, he tallied 51 tackles, including 6.5 for loss, and added an interception, five pass breakups and six pass deflections in 12 starts.
A three-year letterwinner and educational studies major, Moeakiola has earned Scholar Baller® recognition in numerous semesters, an honor awarded to student-athletes who achieve a 3.0 GPA or higher during the semester. He is also heavily involved in a number of Sun Devil Football’s community outreach and service initiatives, including the Scholar Baller Outreach Program, Cooks Children’s Hospital, Student Ministry Project in Euless, Texas, and a number of the football program’s camps and youth clinics.
Sun Devil safety Alden Darby was a quarterfinalist for the award in 2013, and linebacker Brandon Magee and defensive lineman Lawrence Guy were named to the award’s watch list in 2012 and 2010, respectively.
