PULLMAN, Wash. – Starting right-hander Seth Martinez did not allow an earned run in his first career complete game as he led Sun Devil Baseball to a 10-1 series-opening win against Washington State on Thursday night at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman, Wash.
The Sun Devils’ (15-9, 2-5) nine-run win is the team’s largest margin of victory in a Pac-12 game since a 14-4 win against Washington on May 25, 2013.
Martinez (4-2) took a shutout into the ninth inning, struck out five, conceded just five hits and did not issue a walk on 102 pitches, including 71 for strikes. He retired the first nine batters in order and put together five perfect innings to record his fourth win of the season and his seventh quality start in seven starts in 2016.
Martinez has allowed just eight earned runs on 37 hits and nine walks in 49.2 innings as a starter this season. He is holding opponents to a .204 batting average with 46 strikeouts.
Center fielder Andrew Shaps made plays in the batter’s box, in the outfield and on the base paths as he delivered a double, scored two runs, stole home and made a circus catch in the fourth inning. Shortstop Colby Woodmansee went 3-for-5 to notch his 10th multi-hit game of the season, tied for the team lead, catcher Brian Serven drove in a pair of runs, and first baseman David Greer added a double and scored three runs.
ASU scored a run in each of the first two innings to secure an early 2-0 lead. Greer and Woodmansee notched a double and a single, respectively, to put runners on the corners in the opening frame, and a two-out wild pitch brought Greer home for the first run of the night. ASU once again put runners at the corners in the second inning and right fielder Gage Canning registered his first career RBI in Pac-12 play on a sacrifice fly that scored Shaps, who reached via a leadoff walk and advanced on a base hit from left fielder Tyler Williams.
The Devils pushed their lead to five with one run in the sixth and two in the seventh, and added five in the ninth to make it 10-0.
Shaps doubled in the sixth and moved to third on a fly ball, and Canning drew a two-out walk before the Devils put on the double steal. ASU scored twice in the seventh on a leadoff single by second baseman Andrew Snow, a fielding error and double-play groundout. Third baseman Jordan Aboites picked up his first hit of the season during Pac-12 play with a double off the wall to open the ninth and came home on a throwing error, Serven drove in two with a single up the middle two batters later, and a pair of Devils scored on the Cougars (8-15, 1-6) fifth error of the game.
Martinez had a shutout with two outs to play on the night, but two errors, a single and a sacrifice fly pushed a WSU run across with just one out to play. He then induced a fly ball to close out the complete game.
Notes: Greer leads the team with 36 hits…ASU stole home for the second time this season on a double steal in the sixth inning.
