CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sun Devil Baseball mounted a ninth-inning rally for the third consecutive game, but eventually ceded the series finale to No. 3 Oregon State, 7-3, on Sunday at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Ore.
The Sun Devils (13-6, 0-3), who had scored at least one run in the ninth inning in each of the past three games, scored twice in the ninth and put the tying run on deck with no outs. Shortstop Colby Woodmansee and catcher Brian Serven both walked to lead off the frame and a single by designated hitter Sebastian Zawada loaded the bases for left fielder Coltin Gerhart, who plated the lead runners with a two-run single to left field. However, three straight outs by the Devils ended the late push.
Right-hander Eder Erives went a career-long 6 1/3 innings, including five scoreless frames, out of the bullpen. He entered the game with two outs and two runners on in the opening frame and induced an inning-ending flyout on his second pitch before he proceeded to retire eight straight. He struck out three and allowed three runs on five hits and two walks.
The Beavers (15-2, 3-0) struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and chased Arizona State starting left-hander Reagan Todd (1-2) with two outs in the frame behind three hits and two walks. Erives took over for Todd and stranded a pair with a fly ball to center field.
First baseman David Greer and Woodmansee singled and doubled, respectively, in the fourth inning to put a pair of runners in scoring position and Serven followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to cut the Devils’ deficit to one, 2-1.
Erives allowed just one baserunner from the second through fourth innings, but the Beavers broke through for three runs in the fifth via three hits, including a RBI triple, and a sacrifice fly to stretch its advantage, 5-1.
Oregon State added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth as ASU used three relievers. Right-hander Grant Schneider recorded an out to begin the frame, but issued a walk and a bunt single, and committed a throwing error, and was replaced by left-hander Zach Dixon. Dixon walked three of the four batters he faced and conceded a sacrifice fly before right-hander Eric Melbostad took the mound and logged a flyout to center field to leave the bases loaded.
Notes: Woodmansee has reached base safely in all 19 games this season and in 70 of the team’s past 77 games…Woodmansee has a hit in 61 of the team’s past 77 games…Serven caught two runners stealing second and leads the Pac-12 with 16 runners caught stealing…there was a 35-minute weather delay before the start of the second inning.
