FULLERTON, Calif. – Sun Devil Baseball tallied 10 hits and 10 strikeouts in a 5-3 win against No. 23 Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday night at Goodwin Stadium.
Starting right-hander Jordan Aboites (1-0), in his first appearance of the season, allowed just two runs on six hits across five innings and struck out six. He put the Titans down in order in the first to set the tone for the night and the Sun Devils (9-3) never trailed behind a balanced offensive attack.
First baseman David Greer, catcher Brian Serven and center fielder Andrew Shaps each tallied a pair of hits, and designated hitter Sebastian Zawada knocked in his eighth RBI in the past three games.
Aboites stranded eight runners on base, including three in scoring position in the first third of the game, and his swinging strikeout with the bases loaded in the third kept Cal State Fullerton (6-5) off the board and Arizona State’s lead at two.
Right-handers Ryan Hingst and Eder Erives (3) conceded just a pair of hits across the final four innings, including three scoreless frames from Hingst, who entered the game in the sixth inning and retired the first eight batters he faced. Erives closed out the ninth for his third save of the season.
Zawada put the Devils on the board first with a RBI single in the second inning. He capitalized on runners at the corners and no outs with a single to left field that drove home shortstop Colby Woodmansee, who walked and moved to third on a single from Serven.
The Titans responded with one run in the bottom half of the second to knot the game, 1-1, but ASU followed with two singles from third baseman Jeremy McCuin and Shaps, a RBI double from Greer and a sacrifice fly from Woodmansee in the top of the third to retake the lead, 3-1.
The two teams exchanged runs in the fifth and the Devils added another in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead into the latter third of the game. Shaps turned a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the fifth inning into a single up the middle and Greer plated him in the next at-bat when his base hit to left field was misplayed by Fullerton’s outfielder. While the Titans pulled back within two on a walk, hit batter and a single in the bottom of the fifth, left fielder Ryan Lillard opened the ensuing frame with a triple down the right-field line and later scored on a passed ball to extend the advantage back to three.
Fullerton added a run on a sacrifice fly in the ninth, but Erives struck out the final batter of the game to secure the road win.
Notes: ASU moved to 32-30 all-time against Fullerton…the Devils notched their 65th win against a ranked opponent since 2010…Woodmansee has reached base in all 12 games this season and 63 of the Devils’ past 69 games dating back to the start of the 2015 season…Shaps has nine hits in the past five games.
