LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Arizona State track and field program finished the 41st Annual Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on Saturday afternoon with two victories by redshirt sophomore Magdalyn Ewen and redshirt junior Tim White.
"The bright spot for us is Maggie Ewen winning both the weight throw and shot put against quality competition," said Kraft. "I think our guys continue to show our balance ... Tim White and Josh Dixon went 1-2 in the triple jump and for what the coaches in this area said, those were big jumps at this facility."
After throwing to a win in the women's weight throw on Friday, Ewen continued her success with a first-place toss of 16.58m (54-04.75) in the women's shot put. It was also good enough for her personal best by .06 meters that she set at the Texas A&M Quadrangular earlier this season.
White has been on quite a streak in the men's triple jump this season with two victories in two meets this season. While it wasn't his furthest jump of the season, it was good enough for the top spot in the field of 19 jumpers by nearly three feet.
His teammate -- senior Josh Dixon -- was the one nipping at his heels in second place with a leap of 15.59m (51-01.75).
In the sprints, redshirt senior Isaiah Underwood placed fifth in the 60-meter dash final with a time of 6.74 -- just shy of his seasonal best set last week in Flagstaff. He also clocked a time of 21.93 in the men's 200-meter dash for fifth place behind graduate senior teammate Reggie Lewis in third at 21.89.
"I think Isaiah Underwood continues to progress and show that he is an emerging and elite level sprinter in the 60 and 200," Kraft said.
While victories were earned, some rough encounters occurred for the Sun Devils in the relay.
"We took some hits today -- we lost a couple quarter-milers -- we lost Herb Polk warming up Thursday with a high hamstring injury then lost Jeremy Wright in the lead-off leg of the 4x4 with another high hamstring," Kraft said.
The meet was the largest and arguably the first true challenge for ASU as they get closer to the championship season at the end of February. Kraft was pleased with his men's squad and feels the purpose of the meet wasn't seeing victories as much as it was seeing improvements.
"Our men have balance but we got to keep making progress, so for me I love this competition because it shows me where we are as a team," he said. "So overall it was a very solid performance for the Sun Devils, but we have to continue to strive to get better each and every week."
The track and field squad splits up once again next weekend for the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.
