TEMPE, Ariz.—The Arizona State wrestling team (9-7, 0-2 Pac-12) edged out West Virginia, 18-17, on Saturday as the Sun Devils hosted a tri meet with the Mountaineers and Pac-12 foe Stanford at Wells Fargo Arena.
ASU picked up the narrow win over the Mountaineers before Stanford picked up a win over both West Virginia (20-15) and the Sun Devils (23-13).
In the Sun Devils’ win over the Mountaineers, both teams accumulated 17 team points, but per NCAA rule 3.15.3, ASU earned the tiebreaker point with a greater number of match points for decisions, major decisions, and tech falls, 53 to 49.
Sophomore Robbie Mathers got ASU on the board with a 14-4 major decision win over Tony DeAngelo at 141, before Christian Pagdilao also scored a major decision, 13-3, over Zachary Moore, tying the match at 8-8.
West Virginia jumped out to a 14-8 advantage with a pair of decisions at 157 and 165 before sophomore Jacen Petersen, who moved up a weight class, defeated Ross Renzi at 174, 3-1 in the second period of sudden victory.
At 184, redshirt senior Blake Stauffer earned an 6-1 decision over Bubba Scheffel, and at heavyweight, freshman Tanner Hall defeated AJ Vizcarrondo, 8-1, which tied the team points at 17-17, and also gave ASU the match points it needed to overtake the Mountaineers’.
Against Stanford, Pagdilao picked up ASU’s first win, an 11-9 decision over Tommy Pawelski, while senior Matt Kraus picked up a major decision over Walker Dempsey, 12-4, in the first 157-pound bout of his career.
Stauffer and redshirt senior Josh DaSilveira both picked up decisions at their respective weight classes, and Stauffer is now 13-0 in duals on the year while DaSilveira is 11-4.
Up next, the Sun Devils will round out the regular-season home slate on Friday, Jan. 29, hosting Oregon State at 5 p.m. MT. The match will air on the Pac-12 Networks. Prior to the dual, ASU will honor its senior class.
