LAS VEGAS – A three-run lead on Tuesday disappeared on Wednesday as No. 5 Sun Devil Baseball lost to UNLV, 7-6, in a game that spanned nearly 18 hours from 6 p.m. on Tuesday to noon on Wednesday at Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas.

Arizona State held a 5-2 lead with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning on Tuesday night before play was suspended due to an issue with a light pole on the first-base side. The game was resumed more than 13 hours later at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, and the Rebels (13-18) outscored ASU 5-1 over the remaining six innings.

The Sun Devils (21-9) held a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but were derailed in the frame after a series of errors, including a walk, hit batter, balk and a throwing error, led to three runs and allowed UNLV to take its first lead of the game, 6-5. UNLV extended its advantage to a pair with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning via a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right field.

Third baseman David Greer singled through the left side to begin the Devils’ two-out rally in the ninth, and designated hitter Jake Peevyhouse followed with a base hit through the right side and right fielder Trever Allen dropped a RBI single over the second baseman’s head to cut their deficit to one, 7-6. The three consecutive singles put the tying run at second base, but a groundout to the pitcher ended the rally.

Brian Serven recorded three hits, including a double, and Allen and first baseman Joey Bielek each secured a pair of singles. Seven different Devils notched a hit through the first three innings on Tuesday night, including a two-run single by second baseman Andrew Snow and a double by designated hitter RJ Ybarra, to stake ASU a three-run lead.

The two teams traded runs in the opening inning before the Devils tallied four in the top of the second to take an early four-run lead, 5-1. The Rebels scored once in the second to cut their deficit to three and had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the third before play was suspended.

Left-hander Eli Lingos (1-1) started the resumed game and induced a RBI groundout to fist base before he struck out the next batter looking to strand two runners in scoring position and escape the inherited jam. Lingos retired the first seven batters he faced and allowed just a pair of hits before a hit batter, walk and a bunt single left him responsible for three runs and the loss.

Starting right-hander Hever Bueno had three strikeouts in his first career start, including two in the opening inning to strand runners at the corners. He scattered six hits and was responsible for three runs in 2 1/3 innings before the game was suspended.
