PHOENIX – Trever Allen’s two-out, two-run single sparked a fifth-inning rally as No. 12 Sun Devil Baseball defeated UNLV, 5-4, on Wednesday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Arizona State jumped on the board in the bottom of the first, but its one-run advantage turned into a two-run deficit three innings later before the Sun Devils (10-5) poured in four runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim its lead, 5-3.

The Devils saw strong pitching appearances from all four of its pitchers, including starting right-hander Ryan Hingst, left-hander Eli Lingos, and right-handers Darin Gillies and Ryan Burr.

Hingst (1-0) threw 10 pitches, including nine for strikes, in a perfect opening frame and tossed a six-pitch scoreless second inning to begin his first career collegiate start. He allowed three runs on three hits and a pair of walks in the next two innings before he escaped a jam unscathed in the fifth with runners on the corners and one out to earn his first career win.

Lingos, a fellow freshman, took over the in the sixth inning and struck out the side swinging. He conceded one run on a pair of hits in the seventh before giving way to Gillies, who struck out two in a scoreless eighth. Burr (6) closed out the ninth to earn his sixth save of the season and the 30th of his career.

The Devils opened the first inning with a triple by left fielder Jake Peevyhouse and a sacrifice fly from shortstop Colby Woodmansee to take an early 1-0 lead. The Rebels (7-8) countered with a sacrifice fly of their own in the top of the third to knot it, 1-1.

UNLV scored twice in the top of the fourth for a 3-1 lead, but ASU erased the Rebels’ advantage in the bottom of the ensuing inning. Center fielder Johnny Sewald, Peevyhouse and first baseman RJ Ybarra reached via a hit-by-pitch and two walks, respectively, before Allen tied the game with his two-out, two-run single to right-center field. Designated hitter Brian Serven took a walk in the following at-bat and catcher Zach Cerbo mimicked Allen with his own two-out, two-run single to break the tie.

Rebels right-hander Cody Roper (0-2) took his second loss of the season after he allowed two runs on two hits and two walks in 1/3 of an inning. Starting right-hander Blaze Bohall scattered three runs on five hits and struck out two in 4 1/3 innings.
