AMES, Iowa—Arizona State wrestling’s redshirt junior Blake Stauffer earned his 70th career victory on Friday night as the Sun Devils fell to No. 8 Iowa State 27-6 at the Hilton Coliseum.
With the loss, the Sun Devils fall to 7-7 on the year, while the Cyclones improve to 9-2.
At 184 pounds, Stauffer picked up a 4-2 decision over Lelund Weatherspoon, extending his win streak to 20 consecutive bouts dating back to Nov. 21, when the Neosho, Mo., native defeated Utah Valley’s Abel Gomez in a fall in 1:13. On the year, Stauffer improves to 27-1, 13-1 in duals.
Fresh off winning the 157-pound title at the Edinboro Open, sophomore Oliver Pierce started off the night for the Sun Devils with a 6-2 decision win over Luke Goettl. Pierce has now won six straight bouts.
Up next, the Sun Devils return to Wells Fargo Arena on Monday to host Pac-12 foe Cal Poly at 5 p.m. MT on the Pac-12 Networks. Prior to the match, ASU will honor its senior class: Chace Eskam, Kevin Radford, Hans Rasmusson, Joel Smith, and 2014 Sun Devil Kalin Goodsite.
