EDINBORO, Pa.—Arizona State wrestling’s sophomore Oliver Pierce, junior Ray Waters, and redshirt junior Blake Stauffer won titles at 157 pounds, 174 pounds, and 184 pounds, respectively, at the Edinboro Open at the Zafirovski Sports and Recreation Dome on Saturday.
The trio combined to go 14-0 with six bonus-point decisions on the day, and is the first tournament title for Oliver and Waters, and the third so far this season for Stauffer.
In all, 10 Sun Devils placed in their respective weight classes: Oliver Pierce (157, 1st), Ray Waters (174, 1st), Blake Stauffer (184, 1st), Christian Pagdilao (149, 2nd), Ares Carpio (125, 3rd), Dalton Brady (141, 3rd), Kevin Raddord (174, 4th), Matt Kraus (141, 5th), Josh DaSilveira (197, 5th), and Chace Eskam (HWT, 6th).
Pierce started off the day with an 11-1 major decision over Virginia Tech’s Jake Spengler, and followed up with a tech fall win over Lehigh’s Matthew Bonshak. In the quarterfinals, Pierce defeated Central Michigan’s Malcolm Martin, 8-2, and pinned Finger Lakes Prep’s Joe Galasso in 1:43. In the finals, Pierce defeated Edinboro’s Chase Delande, 4-2.
Waters battled through a pair of low scoring, sudden victory decisions in the second round and quarterfinals, the first coming in a 2-1 decision over Ohio State’s Ryan Harris, and the second in a 3-2 decision over Dominic Rigous from Clarion. In the semifinals, Waters battled past Central Michigan’s Jordan Ellingwood, 3-1, and then won via medical forfeit in the finals over Northwestern’s John Sebastian.
Stauffer started off the day with his ninth career tech fall, 16-0 over Michigan’s Brandon Hill. The win moves Stauffer to a tie for No. 7 in the ASU record book for career tech falls with Markus Molica (1993-96) and Curtis Owen (2000-03). Stauffer then pinned Navy’s Ryan Harman in 31 seconds, tying for the fastest Sun Devil pin this season, and earned his eighth major decision in a 14-1 win over Travis McKillop (Unattached). In the finals, Stauffer was up 4-0 when Lock Haven’s Fred Garcia withdrew due to injury after 2:25.
Stauffer is now 13-0 this season and 33-0 in total bonus point victories in his career.
Also for ASU, redshirt freshman Christian Pagdilao saw his win streak dating back to Nov. 2, 2014, come to an end, but not before he picked up four wins en route to a second-place finish at 149-pounds. Pagdilao won 16 straight bouts before falling to Virginia Tech’s Solomon Chishko, 7-2 in the finals. In the earlier bouts, Pagdilao earned a 2:47 fall over LaRone Mack from Eastern Michigan in the first round, and a 17-1 tech fall over Hofstra’s Connor Muli in the quarterfinals.
Junior Ares Carpio and redshirt freshman Dalton Brady each earned third-place finishes in their weight classes of 125 pounds and 141 pounds, respectively. Carpio opened the day with a pin in 2:28 over Buffalo’s Corey Hollister, and ultimately earned a 6-2 decision over Armando Torres from Eastern Michigan in his final bout of the day.
Brady, who opened at 141 pounds for the first time this season with ASU, started off the day with a 9-7 decision over Jensen Lorea of Edinboro, a 10-8 decision in the second round over Finger Lakes Prep’s Will Koll, and a 5-3 decision over Virginia Tech’s Dennis Gustafson. In the third-fourth place match, Brady defeated Eastern Michigan’s Kyle Springer, 4-3.
Other notable wins came from redshirt freshman Judson Preskitt at 133 pounds, who picked up his first two Sun Devil victories. The first win was a 10-4 decision of Buffalo’s Blake Retell, while he made it through the second round via medical forfeit from Ben Calandrino (Unattached).
Kraus led the Sun Devils in total matches on the day with seven, finishing in fifth at 141 pounds. Kraus started the day with a 7-5 decision over Bloomsburg’s Max Good before falling in the second round. Kraus opened the consolation bracket with a 13-3 major decision win over Chase Zemenak from Kent State, and also earned a pin in 2:34 over Zehlin Storr in the fifth round of consolation competition. In the fifth-sixth place dual, Kraus won via forfeit over Lehigh’s Cortlandt’s Schuyler.
Up next, the Sun Devils return to the dual slate on Friday, Feb. 13 as they travel to Ames, Iowa, for a contest with Iowa State at 6 p.m. MT. On Monday, Feb. 16, ASU will host Cal Poly in its home finale and Senior Night at 5 p.m. MT on the Pac-12 Networks.
