STANFORD, Calif.—The Arizona State wrestling team (7-6, 2-2 Pac-12) dropped an 18-13 dual with Stanford (8-2, 3-1 Pac-12) on Sunday at Maples Pavilion.
“We set ourselves up to win,” head coach Zeke Jones said. “But we inevitably didn’t do the job. It’s easy to pick out Oliver Pierce’s loss at 157, that takedown in overtime, but it’s up and down the lineup. Everyone needs to do their part and do their job. I do think Blake (Stauffer) getting that bonus was big. Ray finished the dual great. The effort was good, and we have a lot to look at going forward.
ASU jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start things off, with a 10-1 major decision win from redshirt junior Blake Stauffer over Ryan Davies at 184 pounds and a 7-6 decision from redshirt junior Josh DaSilveira over Garrett Krohn at 197 pounds.
Stauffer has won three straight bouts by way of the major decision, and has also had five majors in the last seven bouts. He is also 17-0 in major decisions in his career. DaSilveira improves to 6-1 in his last seven bouts, including three pins.
Also for ASU, redshirt freshman Christian Pagdilao picked up a 9-5 decision win over Garrett Schaner at 149 pounds, extending his win streak to 12 straight. He is also 8-0 on the year in duals.
Junior Ray Waters ended the day for ASU on a high note, picking up a 5-3 decision win over Keaton Subjeck at 174 pounds and extending his win streak to five straight bouts.
Up next, ASU travels to Edinboro, Pa., for the Edinboro Open on Saturday, Feb. 7. ASU will resume the dual match slate on Friday, Feb. 13, at Iowa State at 6 p.m. MT in Ames.
