HAMPTON, Va.—Arizona State wrestling’s comeback bid fell short on Saturday as the Sun Devils (5-5 duals) were edged by West Virginia, 21-20, in the finale of the Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum.
On the weekend, redshirt freshman Christian Pagdilao and redshirt junior No. 2 Blake Stauffer went undefeated through four matches, picking up a tech fall and a decision, respectively, in the dual against the Mountaineers.
Pagdilao scored ASU’s first points of the dual with a 20-3 tech fall over Louis Colonna at 149 pounds, while Stauffer defeated Jakob Scheffel for the third time this season in a 5-2 decision at 184 pounds, which brought the Sun Devils within one, 18-17.
West Virginia used a decision at 197 pounds to go up by four, and while redshirt senior Chace Eskam battled out to a 2-1 tiebreaker victory over Anthony Vizcarrondo at heavyweight, it was not enough to give ASU the win.
Also for the Sun Devils, Oliver Pierce picked up a 6-2 decision over Brutus Scheffel at 157 pounds, while Ray Waters recorded a pin in 1:22 over Weston VonEgidy at 174 pounds.
Up next, the Sun Devils return to Wells Fargo Arena to resume the Pac-12 conference slate, hosting CSU Bakersfield on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. MT. The match will be streamed live via thesundevils.com.
