HAMPTON, Va.—The Arizona State wrestling team went 2-1 on the first day of the Virginia Duals, defeating Kent State and upsetting No. 17 Rider on Friday at the Hampton Coliseum.
ASU (5-4 duals) went 1-1 in the Hampton River pool with a 31-6 win over Kent State before falling to No. 6 Virginia Tech, 25-15. Up next in the Silver Pool, the Sun Devils used a pair of pins to upset No. 17 Rider, 28-16.
For the Sun Devils, redshirt freshman Christian Pagdilao, and redshirt juniors Blake Stauffer and Josh DaSilveira each went 3-0 on the day at their weight classes of 149, 184, and 197 pounds, respectively.
Pagdilao started off the day with a pin over Kent State’s Michael Depalma in 4:13, and then upset Virginia Tech’s No. 14 Sal Mastriani in a 7-2 decision. In his final bout of the day, Pagdilao recorded a 5-2 decision over Bryant Clangdon from Rider.
At 184, No. 2-ranked Stauffer opened the day with a major decision over the Michael Vollant, 8-0, and then grinded out a 3-1 decision win over the Hokies’ Austin Gabel. In the final bout of the day, Stauffer recorded his second major decision win, 12-4, over Clint Morrison.
DaSilveira recorded a pair of pins at 197, one over the Hokies’ Jared Haught in 5:33, and the other over Rider’s Ali Yildiz in 5:56. DaSilveira also recorded a 5-3 decision win over Cole Baxter from Kent State in his first bout of the day.
Up next, the Sun Devils will face West Virginia on Saturday at 8 a.m. MT/10 a.m. ET. This marks the third time ASU has faced the Mountaineers so far this season, earning a 19-13 win in both teams’ dual opener on Nov. 13, before falling at home last Sunday, Jan. 4, 22-12.
