TEMPE, Ariz. - Starting right-hander Seth Martinez threw seven scoreless innings and the Arizona State University baseball team shut out New Mexico State, 2-0, on Tuesday night at Packard Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

The Sun Devils (24-17) recorded their second shutout in the past three games as Martinez combined with right-handed relievers Jordan Aboites and Ryan Burr to allow a season-low two hits and strike out 12.

Martinez (3-0) tied his career-high with six strikeouts and scattered a pair hits across his career-long outing to earn his third win of the season. He issued five walks, but did not allow a runner past second base.

Aboites and Burr (10) struck out the side in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to help ASU record double-digit strikeouts for the eighth game this season. Burr has 21 career saves and is three away from tying school record, which has stood since 1967.

Designated hitter RJ Ybarra secured his 13th multi-hit game of the season with a pair of singles and second baseman Tucker Esmay drove in a run on a grounder in the seventh to lead the Devils at the plate.

Center fielder Johnny Sewald took a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch before he scored the first run of the game on a double-play groundout from catcher Nate Causey.

Right fielder Trever Allen opened the seventh inning with a double, the only extra-base hit of the game for either team, and third baseman David Greer followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Esmay brought Allen home on a grounder to the shortstop to put the Devils ahead by two and reached base on a fielding error, but Sewald lined into a triple play to end the inning.

Aggies (23-18) starting left-hander Trey Higginbotham (0-4) allowed one run on two hits in 3 1/3 innings in the loss.

Notes
ASU moved to 34-2 all-time against New Mexico State and have won seven straight against the Aggies… Greer made his first career start at third base and Causey made his first start at catcher since April 30, 2013.
