SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Arizona State University men took fourth overall while Shelby Houlihan was eighth for the Sun Devil women as the team opened the championship season with the Pac-12 Conference Championships in Santa Clarita, Calif., on Saturday.
Nick Happe paced the way for the Sun Devil men, coming across the line in 11th overall in a time of 23:45 to earn second-team All-Conference honors for the first time in his career.
Not far behind him was graduate transfer Zach Zarda, who has been a welcomed addition to the Sun Devils as he posted a 15th-place overall finish to just miss All-Conference honors in 23:52.
Darius Terry was next for the Sun Devils in 23rd overall in 24:13 and was followed pretty closely by redshirt freshman Ryan Herson in 26th overall in 24:16. Garrett Baker-Slama rounded out the point –scorers for the Sun Devils with a 38th-place overall finish in 24:27.
The Sun Devils also got strong runs from redshirt junior Steven Schnieders (40th, 24:33) and Garrett Seawell (46th, 24:46).
Arizona State finished with 109 points and we were just four points of a podium finish behind third-place Oregon’s 105 points and just 27 points behind second-place Stanford with 82. Colorado was the team champions with 49 points.
Entering today’s competition, the ASU men were unranked while Oregon was No. 8 in the country and UCLA was No. 15.
On the women’s side, Shelby Houlihan took eighth for the second consecutive year for the Sun Devils in a time of 20:26 as she continued her streak of being the top Sun Devil finisher in every race she has competed in at ASU. She earned second-team All-Conference honors for the second consecutive season.
Natasa Vulic was next for the Sun Devils in 38th-place overall in 21:30 and was followed by sophomore Macy Bricks in 21:44 in 45th. Hailey Hanna was 67th in 22:17 while Adriana Olivas rounded out the scoring for ASU in 82nd place in 22:36.
The Sun Devils were ninth overall in the team standings with 210 points, just 10 points out of seventh place.
Arizona State now sets its sights on the NCAA West Regional Championships, set to take place Nov. 9 in Seattle, Wash. There, the teams will have their last chances to qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will occur in Louisville, Kent., on Nov. 17.
