Gym Devils Put Up Tough Fight in Loss to Arizona

TUSCON, Ariz.--In a tight race for the win, the Sun Devils fell to the Wildcats 193.625-192.050. The score was extremely close going into the third rotation and only tenths apart at the start of the fourth rotation. Senior Mary Atkinson took second place in the all-around scoring a 38.675, while Molly Quirk took first with a 38.775.

The Gym Devils hit five for five routines on the uneven bars in the first rotation earning a team total of 48.600, which gave them an early lead in the competition. Junior Stephanie Hangartner was the event-leader for the Sun Devils scoring a 9.775 after hitting back-to-back releases. Freshman Emily Warfield performed a strong, clean routine to score her career-high of 9.725. Sammie Seaman earned a 9.525. Seniors Mary Atkinson, Beaté Jones and Junior Nickie Johnson all hit their routines scoring 9.700.

The Gym Devils hit the runway on vault earning a team total of 48.225. Seaman hit tying for second place with a 9.750. Jones scored a solid 9.700 taking third place. Junior Callie Price stuck her vault posting 9.675. Atkinson scored a 9.650 after bouncing forward taking a giant step on her landing. Amanda Davies made season debut on vault posting a 9.450 while Amelia Rew fell on her vault leading her to a 8.975.

Moving into the third rotation, the competition was hot with the Sun Devils and Wildcats tied at 96.825. Senior Brittany Schuett tumbled with power tying a season-high 9.725. Davies also scored a season-high of 9.725. Atkinson hit the floor with strong passes, bouncing slightly forward on the final pass to post a 9.700. Junior Madison Snowden struggled on her first pass but pulled it together with two solid passes hitting a 9.650. Johnson took one step on first pass in an otherwise solid routine posting a 9.625. Price showed off an exciting new routine nailing two passes but landed short on her final pass scoring a 8.950. The Gym Devils hit a floor total of 48.425.

Three falls on beam hurt the Gym Devils when tenths were needed most. Atkinson had a shaky start with two extra steps on her mount but finished strong to score a 9.625. Jones had a solid beam performance nailing her dismount to also earn a 9.625. Johnson posted a 9.500 after two big wobbles, one on her series as well as her leap connection. Seaman hit a flawless leap series and side switch leap but fell on her series tallying a 9.05. Snowden nailed her series but fell on a leap connection posting a 8.950. Sophomore Christina Salavec hit her series but fell leading her to earn a 8.925. The Gym Devils finished the competition with a beam total of 46.800.

Next up the Gym Devils host their first home meet of the season next week on Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. MT in Wells Fargo Arena where they will take on the Brown Bears of Brown University.
