vTEMPE, Ariz. – Striking out nine and allowing only two hits, Sam Parlich’s first collegiate start in the circle was a masterpiece Sunday afternoon as she pitched the complete game shut out to lead ASU over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds with ASU taking the 3-0 win to close out the 2010 Kajikawa Classic. The Sun Devils close out opening weekend with a 5-1 record overall.
While the offense was making solid contact, they just couldn’t seem to pull across a run as they went scoreless through three innings, while Parlich kept the T-Birds off-balance with her arsenal. Finally in the fourth inning, Annie Lockwood launched a 1-2 to left field to break the stalemate.
Not to be outdone, lead-off batter Lesley Rogers decided to showcase some muscle as she crushed a pitch deep to right field for another solo shot to push ASU up 3-0. The Sun Devils weren’t quite finished yet though, as Katelyn Boyd decided to get in on the action as she dropped a bomb so far into right center, it may never be found. The home run gave Boyd five on the season, half of her entire season total from last year.
Parlich took the reigns on the rest of the show as she kept SUU on their toes and off the base paths, giving up only two hits and no walks in a stellar career debut.
The Sun Devils will return to the diamond next weekend as they set to host the Littlewood Classic. The tournament will run from February 19-21 with Rutgers, Illinois State, Texas State and Iowa all rolling into town to compete.
