MADISON, Wisc. –  The Arizona State women’s soccer team saw its season come to an end on Friday night as it fell to Wisconsin in a penalty kick shootout (4-3) after neither team could break a 1-1 tie in 20 minutes of overtime.

Making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2003, the Sun Devils (9-7-4), fell behind less than two minutes into the game when Wisconsin sophomore midfielder Leigh Williams scored to put the Badgers (9-5-6) up 1-0.

The Badgers’ lead would stand until the 72nd minute when Sun Devil freshman midfielder Aissa Sanchez floated a shot passed the outstretched hands of Badgers goalkeeper Michele Dalton for the first goal of her career.

Sanchez’ goal was the highlight of a second half dominated by the Sun Devils. After tying the game, the Sun Devils continued to keep pressure on the Badgers. Combined with the two overtimes ASU out shot Wisconsin 14-7 over the last 65 minutes of game time and nearly took the lead on more than one occasion.

With neither team able to win the game in overtime a penalty kick shootout was used to decide the victor where the Badgers made four of their five kicks to three of five for ASU to advance to the second round.

Juniors Karin Volpe (8) and Alexandra Elston (5) combined for 13 of ASU’s 19 shots for the game while Alyssa Gillmore made six saves in the net.
