TEMPE, Ariz. - The teacher taught so well, his pupils defeated him. Terri Patraw and Jenny Haigh, the head coach and assistant coach, respectively, for the Arizona State women's soccer team, coached their way to their team's ninth victory of the season Friday night as ASU defeated Colorado College, 2-0, at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. Colorado College's head coach Greg Ryan coached Patraw and Haigh when the two were collegiate players at the University of Wisconsin.
Freshman Holly Cohen scored both goals for the Sun Devils (9-5-0, 2-3-0 Pac-10). Her first goal of the game, and first game-winner of her career, came in the 10th minute when Shanel Scott passed a through ball and Cohen went one-on-one with goalkeeper Kristin Masunaga, beating her with a juke and punched the ball in the goal. Cohen's second goal came in the 60th minute when she knocked down a Megan Gillaspie cross with a header and slide to kick the ball past Masunaga.
In the early minutes of the game, the Tigers appeared to have scored the first goal of the game, but the goal was disallowed because of an offsides call. Kasey Clark and Corrine Roberge each had two shots to lead the Tigers.
The Sun Devil's shutout of Colorado College was their fifth of the season and ties a single-season record for most shutouts. Erin Reinke recorded her fourth compete shutout.
The Sun Devils next action will be at New Mexico, Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
