TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State senior Laura Moon received first-team consideration, while sophomore Maggie Germaine garnered second-team honors and junior Cassidy Vreeke received honorable mention as the 2002 Pac-10 All-Academic women's gymnastics teams were named Friday.
Moon, who is ASU's school record holder in the all-around and co-record holder on uneven bars, has a 3.63 GPA and is majoring in political science. She missed the first four meets of the year and has been held to just two events rather than her normal four due to preseason knee surgery and other injuries sustained separately in a fall during practice.
In the six meets since her comeback, Moon has been a team leader on uneven bars and balance beam, hitting nine of 10 routines for scores of 9.8 or better. She has a pair of season-high 9.825s on bars, and has improved her career best on beam to 9.95 this season. In 2001, Moon earned second-team All-America honors in the all-around. She is a 1998 graduate of Saguaro High.
Germaine, who is tied for third in ASU history in the all-around, is ASU's leader this season on vault (9.95), uneven bars (9.9) and floor exercise (9.95). Majoring in exercise science, the 2000 graduate of Mountain View High has a 3.61 GPA. Last season Germaine picked up second-team All-America honors on vault. She is currently tied for 20th nationally in that event.
Vreeke, who earned honorable mention academic distinction last season, repeated the acclaim this year. A business management major, Vreeke has a GPA of 3.04. She has hit eight of her last nine combined routines on vault, beam and floor. This season she improved her career best on vault and beam to 9.925. On floor she has scored 9.9 or better three times, with a 9.925 season best.
The ASU women's gymnastics team will be vying for the program's 17th team bid to the NCAA Championships next weekend, hosting the NCAA South Central Regional, April 6, at 6:00 p.m. in Wells Fargo Arena.
