The Showdown: Softball's 'Duel in the Desert': Part Two

The top-ranked Sun Devil Softball squad (46-3, 8-1 Pac-10) squad continues their home Pac-10 slate Friday, hosting in-state rival and back-to-back National Champions, the seventh-ranked Arizona Wildcats (29-12, 6-4 Pac-10). First pitch for Friday night's event is at 7 p.m.

Last Time Out:

Last week saw the Sun Devils play one last road game against the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson before opening their home Pac-10 slate against UCLA and Washington.

Against the `Cats last week, the story was a little different than usual as ASU headed down to the `Cats den in Tucson and gave them an 8-1 loss, with four Sun Devil home runs in the game, the most 07' World Series MVP Taryne Mowatt has even given up in her career.

The Sun Devils shone again Friday night as they took on the only remaining undefeated team in the Pac-10 in No. 4 UCLA and downed them in an easy 3-0 shut-out. Krista Donnenwirth went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the team, with a highlight on the night coming from Lesley Rogers who hit her

fi rst career home run off a 2-1 pitch in which she took Angelica Selden deep to right fi eld, for only Selden's fourth home run of the season.

Saturday night pitted ASU against No. 23 Washington where live on Fox Sports Net, the Sun Devils showed what they're made of, scoring seven runs on only four hits, one a grand slam in the

first inning from sophomore outfi elder, Caylyn Carlson for her ninth home run of the season. Kaitlin Cochran also went yard in the game, cracking a solo shot in the fourth to become the fourth Sun Devil this season with double digit home runs.

Sunday afternoon saw the Sun Devils fall

flat though as an exhausted Katie Burkhart still struck out 11 Huskies in the game, but the offense flatlined, leaving 11 on base en route to a 3-0 loss, their first of the Pac-10 season.

In addition to their Pac-10 slate, the Sun Devils added a doubleheader against UNLV on Monday. Megan Elliott came out to take claim to both wins on the day as ASU came from behind in both to win 6-5 and 14-7. In game two Renee Welty went 4-for-4 with a home run and

five RBIs in the game. Mandy Urfer, Krista Donnenwirth and Caylyn Calrlson also hit home runs in the doubleheader. With Carlson's home run she became the fifth Sun Devil with double digit home runs on the season.

For her phenomenal efforts in the circle last week, Katie Burkhart was also named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week. She pitched 28.2 innings in six days for a .73 ERA and 48 strikeouts for three wins, a loss and a save.
