Renee returns for her final season as a Sun Devil after a 2008 season that saw her trade off catching duties with All Pac-10 catcher, Kristen Miller. Showing prowess both at and behind the plate, Welty hit .366 on the season for 20 runs scored with four doubles and nine longballs for 29 RBIs in 38 games played. She held an astonishing .744 slugging percentage on the year and a .505 on base percentage. Behind the plate as well she was phenomenal, with a 1.000 fielding percentage while guiding her pitchers to victory. She enters the 2009 season as the number one behind the plate and will look to build on her success while leading the entire Sun Devil squad.
Renee joined the 2008 Sun Devil squad as a junior transfer from Chandler-Gilbert Community College where she was an outstanding catcher and utility player. In her two years at Chandler-Gilbert, Renee proved to be invaluable in the 2007 season where she was named All-Conference, All-American and Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year as well as claiming a batter of the week award March 19-25. While at Chandler-Gilbert Renee also earned her Associates Degree and looks to finishing her Bachelor's in her two years at ASU. She was also a member of the World University team which traveled to Thailand for competition over the summer.
Prior to Chandler-Gilbert CC, Renee was a stand-out softball and volleyball player at Mesquite High School in Gilbert, Ariz. where she was four-year letterwinner in both softball and volleyball. The team captain in both 2004 and 2005, Renee compiled an impressive list of marks and accolades including being named First-Team All-Arizona Player, ('04 & '05) First-Team All-Fiesta Region, ('03, '04 & '05) 2004 Fiesta Region Player of the Year, 2004 Softball MVP and 2005 Golden Bat award. In 2005 alone, Renee compiled a batting average of .483 along with nine home runs. She also excelled in the classroom as well taking Golden Scholar Awards and Athletic Scholar Awards throughout her career at Mesquite ('02-'05).
The BIS major was born on January 24, 1987 in Seattle, Wash. to Ron Welty (retired) and Georgia Massey (teacher). She is the second of four children with one older sister, Shonna Massey (22) and two younger brothers, Ronnie Welty (20) and Shelby Massey (20). Her brother Ronnie played baseball at Chandler-Gilbert Community College for one year.
