TEMPE, Ariz. - Three first place finishes by Arizona State swimmers were among the highlights of Saturday's second day of competition at Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas.
Junior Adam Guzauskas touched the wall first in the men's 100-meter breaststroke in an NCAA Consideration time of 1:01.36, just beating out Arizona's Rob Henikman. Freshman Anders Lyrbring led an impressive Sun Devil showing in the 200-meter freestyle, finishing second with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:47.02. One spot behind Lyrbring was ASU sophomore Bo West, who will receive national championship consideration for his time of 1:47.73. Arizona State continued to show the strength of its relay teams with a second place, 1:39.08 performance by the 200 medley relay team of Pablo Abal, Guzauskas, Simon MacDonald and Scott VonSchoff.
On the women's side, senior Carolyn Adel staked her claim as one of the top 400 individual medley swimmers in the nation by winning the event with a mark of 4:42.32. The native of Suriname, who was a bronze medalist in the 400 IM at the 1999 Pan American Games, easily qualified for the NCAA Championships. Adel then teamed with Alicia Wheelock, Sarah Baham and Casey Murphy to take top honors in the 800 freestyle relay (8:11.75).
In diving action at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center, ASU's Marc Briggs and Alan Sonkin placed third and fourth, respectively, in the men's one-meter competition.
