Sam Bennett

Sam Bennett

TitleFootball Analyst

After serving as a graduate assistant for two seasons, Sam Bennett was named offensive analyst by ASU head coach Herm Edwards on March 12, 2018.

“I see a lot of potential in Sam Bennett and feel he will be an asset to our program,” Edwards said. “I am looking forward to seeing him grow in this role while learning from the rest of the coaches on the staff. His relentless energy is an essential part of how we operate.”

Bennett will transition into the role of analyst after serving as an offensive graduate assistant the past two seasons. The Sun Devil offense averaged 32.6 points and 411.56 yards per game the past two seasons with Bennett as part of the offensive staff. Bennett worked closely with an ASU offense that finished as the 14th-highest graded unit in the FBS according to Pro Football Focus. Utilizing his background as a former offensive lineman in high school, Bennett worked extensively with an offensive line that paved the way for a 1,000-yard rusher and another 650-yard rusher. The offense scored 30 or more points 16 times in the two seasons Bennett served as an offensive graduate assistant.

“I’m excited and appreciative for the opportunity given to me by Coach Edwards and the coaching staff to remain at ASU in this role,” Bennett said. “My wife and I are excited to be staying in Tempe and continuing to be a part of the Sun Devil family. I look forward to a great spring and 2018 season here in Tempe.”

Bennett came to Arizona State to be an offensive graduate assistant after serving in a similar position at Rice University from 2014-16. While at Rice, he earned his Master’s Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2016. Before taking a year off of coaching to work in the private business sector, Bennett coached football, basketball, and track at Scoggins Middle School in Frisco for one year after graduating from Texas Tech with a B.A. in Advertising in December of 2010.

The son of 40-year coaching veteran and former Sun Devil defensive coordinator Phil Bennett, Bennett was a two-year letterman at SMU as a deep snapper, earning All C-USA Freshman honors in 2006. He graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas, where he was a starter on the Scots’ 15-0 state championship squad. He played on the offensive line, blocking for future Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford as well as handling the deep snapping chores.

Bennett and his wife Stephanie reside in Tempe.
