Matt Butterfield joined the staff of ASU in December of 2022 as the Football Chief of Staff/Senior Coaching Advisor/Pro liaison. He works directly with Kenny Dillingham and the coaching staff in his fifth overall year at ASU.
Butterfield comes to ASU from the United States Football League (USFL) where he served as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator with the New Orleans Breakers. His special teams units were ranked second in the league and his tight end earned all-league honors while leading all USFL tight ends’ in yards and receptions.
Butterfield’s first full-time position was at Arizona State University (2010-12), where he was in quality control at one time or another for the offense (wide receivers) and special teams under Hall of Fame coach Dennis Erickson. He then moved on to UCLA, where he was an offensive graduate assistant during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, working particularly with the inside wide receivers. The Bruins won the Pac-12 South Division under first-year head coach Jim Mora and were nipped by Stanford in the league’s title game. He returned to ASU for the 2014-15 seasons as the senior associate offensive analyst with the quarterbacks under head coach Todd Graham.
In 2015, he was at Boise State University as a graduate assistant on offense, where he worked with the running backs under head coach Bryan Harsin. That year, he coach the nation’s touchdown leader and an offense that ranked 15th in the nation. From there, he headed west to the University of Oregon, where in 2016 he was the Ducks’ senior offense (tight ends) and special teams analyst under head coach Mark Helfrich. Oregon's tight ends led the nation in receptions and were second in receiving yards that year. For the 2017 season, he was an offensive assistant at Oklahoma State University, working with Coach Gundy and the Cowboys' quarterbacks and tight ends, helping the Cowboys have the most-explosive offense in the country. That year, he coached the Big XII’s first ever offense with +4500 yard passer, +1000 yard rusher, and two +1000 yard receivers. In 2018-2019, he had been an offense and special teams assistant at the University of California-Berkeley. He then spent four seasons at University of Colorado coaching with the offense under head coaches Mel Tucker and Karl Dorrell before leaving for the professional ranks in USFL.
In his career, he has coached in nine bowl games and one USFL Playoff Semi Final: 2007 Independence, 2011 Las Vegas, 2012 Holiday, 2013 Sun, 2014 Sun, 2015 Poinsettia, 2017 Camping World, 2018 Cheez-It, 2020 Alamo and 2022 USFL Inaugural Playoff in Canton, OH. Four of those games where his teams won championships. Throughout his career, he has coached 20 all conference players and 13 NFL draft picks.
Butterfield earned his bachelor’s degree in History from University of Colorado in 2010, and earned a Masters of Education in Education from UCLA in 2013. As an undergraduate at CU, he got his first taste of the coaching profession as he was a student coach assisting with linebackers.
He was born in Scottsdale, Arizona, and graduated from Brophy College Prep in Phoenix, where he lettered in football. Brophy was a four-time Desert Valley Conference titlist and a one-time AIA state champion during his prep career. Notably, Matt is the Grandson to Hall of Fame Junior College Coach – Sam Butterfield. His hobbies include sports, music, the outdoors and traveling.
