Men's golfer Jesper Kennegard has been named the Pac-10 Golfer of the Month for May, as he won the NCAA West Regional and then tied for ninth at the NCAA Championships in Toledo.
Kennegard on the year earned honorable mention All-America honors with a 72.81 stroke average in 12 appearances and three top-10 finishes. In 24 career tournaments, he has a 72.48 stroke average and already has eight top-10 finishes.
Kennegard saved his best for last this season as he shot a 12-under 204 (66-68-70) at the 2009 NCAA West Regional in Daly City, Calif., May 14-16 and took home the individual title. He also tied for ninth at the NCAA Championships (May 26-30) by shooting par, including a 2-under 69 in the second round.
He also earned second-team Pac-10 All-Academic honors.
With outright victories in 2009 by both the team and Kennegard at the West Regional, ASU has won or tied for the title in a NCAA Regional six times. ASU had previously won outright titles in 2001, 1999 and 1995. It tied with Arizona in 1991 and with New Mexico in 1998. Sun Devil Paul Casey won the 1998 individual title outright followed by Jeff Quinney (1999), Benjamin Alvarado Holley (2007) and then Kennegard in 2009. Matt Jones shared medalist honors in 2001.
