HOLY TOLEDO
The Arizona State University men's golf team (#13 Golfweek/#13 Golfstat/#14 Golf Coaches) competes in the NCAA Championships held May 26-30 at the Inverness Club (par-71, 7,255 yards) and hosted by the University of Toledo. It will be the second time the Rockets have served as the tournament host with the previous occurrence coming 65 years ago in 1944. The Inverness Club was founded in 1903 and has hosted four U.S. Opens, one U.S. Amateur, one U.S. Senior Open and two PGA Championships. The Rockets' men's golf program has also hosted the Inverness Intercollegiate there since 2000.
THE NEW FORMAT
The 2009 NCAA Championships will feature a new twist with the team champion determined via match play, the first time the winner hasn't been awarded by total strokes since 1965. The top eight teams after 54 holes of stroke play will advance to match play with the quarterfinals and semifinals being held on Friday, May 29 and the championship match set for Saturday, May 30. During the match-play portion of the championships, each match will be worth one point with all five players participating. The first team to win three points within the team match will advance or, in the case of the championship match, be declared the national champion.

SUN DEVILS LOOKING FOR NUMBER THREE
The Sun Devils have won two NCAA titles, in 1990 under then-head coach and 2002 ASU Hall of Fame inductee Steve Loy, and in 1996 under current head coach and 2009 National Golf Coaches Hall of Fame inductee Randy Lein.
SUN DEVILS PROGRAM CHATTER
In the past 16 seasons (since Lein took over the ASU duties) 11 different team champions have been crowned and Lein is the only coach to have two individual champions in that time (freshman Alejandro Canizares in 2003 and Todd Demsey in 1993). ASU also has finished in the top six eight times in those 16 years and has qualified for the NCAA Championships in 25 of the past 26 seasons, missing only in 2002, including each of the past seven seasons, tied for the fourth-best mark in the nation in that time.
IT ISN'T EASY
ASU has made the NCAA Championship in the past seven seasons and in 16 of 17 seasons under Randy Lein, but it sure isn't getting easier with the 30-team, three-round regional format. Using Golfweek's rankings through the regionals, nine top 30 teams are not going to Toledo, a list that includes seventh-ranked Clemson, No. 18 LSU, No. 21 Indiana, No. 23 UNLV, No. 24 NC State, No. 25 San Diego State, No. 28 Ole Miss, No. 29 Colorado State and No. 30 Florida State.
IT ISN'T EASY, PART TWO
Of the 30 teams that made the NCAA Championships this season, only 15 played in the 2008 championship: UCLA, Stanford, USC, Oklahoma State, Washington, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M, Alabama, Arizona State, Illinois, Texas, Wake Forest and Oregon.
LEAGUE IS PRETTY DARN GOOD
There are seven Pac-10 teams in the 30-team field, the most of any conference. ASU is the top-seeded Pac-10 team, as it is seeded fourth and will play with fifth-seeded UCLA and sixth-seeded Georgia out of the SEC. The other Pac-10 seeds are No. 7 Washington (Pac-10 champion), No. 13 Stanford, Nov. 15 USC, No. 18 Oregon and No. 21 Arizona.

1. Knut Borsheim
- junior was 10-under in par-5 holes at the NCAA West Regional...72.63 stroke average.
2. Stephan Gross
- 72.33 stroke average...posted 35 pars at 2009 West Regional.
3. Jesper Kennegard
- posted 15 birdies and an eagle en route to his 2009 NCAA West Regional title, the second of his career...72.97 stroke average.
4. Chan Kim
- starting to really play well as he averaged 2.92 strokes on the par-3 holes at NCAA regional, tied for best of tournament...72.23 stroke average is one of the best by a freshman in ASU history (see chart below).
5. Scott Pinckney
- has developed into very consistent fifth player with 35 pars last weekend...73.32 stroke average.
ASU IN THE REGIONALS:
With last weekend's victories by both the team and Jesper Kennegard at the West Regional, ASU has won or tied for the title in a NCAA Regional six times. ASU tied with Arizona in 1991 and tied with New Mexico in 1998. It won the title outright in 1995, 1999, 2001 and now 2009. Sun Devil Jesper Kennegard this season. Matt Jones shared medalist honors in 2001.
THE HEAD COACH
Jesper Kennegard (1). He has won Pac-10 Coach-of-the-Year five times (1993, 1995, 1996, 1999 and 2000) while at ASU and twice at USC (1980 and 1986). Lein (pronounced "Line") is a 1975 graduate of Cal State Northridge.
NCAA INDIVIDUAL CHAMPS FROM ASU/PAC-10
ASU has had four NCAA medalists on six occasions: Jim Carter (1983), Phil Mickelson (1989, 1990, 1992), Todd Demsey (1993) and Alejandro Canizares (2003). Other Pac-10 winners include: Frank Tatum Jr. of Stanford (1942), Scott Simpson of USC (1976 and 1977), Ron Commans of USC (1981), Tiger Woods of Stanford (1996), James Lepp of Washington (2005), Jamie Lovemark of USC (2007) and Kevin Chappell of UCLA (2008).
