- With Desiree Serrano's fierce pitching backed with the Devils high-powered bats back in line, the #10 ASU Softball Team defeated the #11 Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette and grabbed win number 30 on the season with a final of 5-2 in the first round of consolation bracket play Saturday afternoon at the 2006 Judi Garman Classic. The #10 Devils are now 30-3 on the season, while the Cajuns drop to 22-3.
Serrano's 13 K's and four allowed hits combined with a home run from Ashley Werschky, two hits from Kaitlin Cochran and a huge double from Sharee Zaleski and seven Devil hits on the day, ASU knocked four around the bags while keeping the #11 Ragin' Cajuns to only two runs on the day.
The Devils jumped out in the second inning with a solo home run over the left field wall from Ashley Werschky, her fifth on the season off of Krystal Lewallen to put ASU ahead 1-0. ASU's offense caught fire in the third as Jackie Vasquez reached first on an error followed with singles from Cochran and Cowles to load the bases when Sharee Zaleski stepped up to smash a double to right field driving in two, leaving Cowles on third to be hit home on a ground out from Heidi Knabe bumping the Devils up 4-0.
The Ragin' Cajuns didn't go quietly though as Danyele Gomez singled to left field only to be followed up with a huge home run over left field from the first baseman, Lacey Bertucci to cut down the Devils lead 5-2. Serrano battled back though in the seventh as she fanned two Cajuns and a ground out to end it.
The Devils will finish play in the Judi Garman Classic tomorrow as they fight for the consolation bracket championship when they take on #23 (18-11) in the semifinals at 8:30 a.m. in .
