The Arizona State men's basketball program has signed Trinity Valley Community College product Antwi Atuahene, head coach Rob Evans has announced. He joins College of Southern Idaho product Bruno Claudino as spring signing period additions to the Sun Devil program.
Atuahene, who will have three years of eligibility remaining, led the Cardinals in scoring (17.4 points per game), rebounding (6.4), assists (10.0) and steals (3.1). His 17.4 points per game was fifth in Region XIV and he shot 109-of-244 (.447) from the field on the year. He also shot 75 percent (120-of-160) from the free throw line and earned first-team All-Region XIV honors.
"Antwi really pushes the ball well and has a great ability to get to the basket," says Rob Evans, noting the 6-3 guard averaged eight free throw attempts per game last year. "He finds teammates when they are open and is very active on both ends of the floor. He has been very productive on the high school and junior college levels."
Atuahene played high school basketball at Father Henry Carr Catholic Secondary School in Toronto and was named the Toronto Sun's Mr. Basketball Ontario in 2002-2003. He averaged 34.5 points, 11.5 assists and 10.0 rebounds in his senior year with highs of 48 points and 22 assists in 2002-2003. He led Henry Carr to a 44-4 record and an appearance in The Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAAA (largest school) finals.
Atuahene scored more than 6,000 points and dished out more than 1,800 assists in his scholastic career. He averaged 36.5 ppg. as a junior, including a career high of 56 points and was a standout at the 2002 Nike All-American Camp in Indianapolis
Claudino and Atuahene will join a fall signing class that included Sylvester Seay (Winchendon School (Mass.)/San Bernadino, Calif.), Seketoure Henry (Lynwood High School/Lynwood, Calif.), and Jeff Pendergraph (Etiwanda High School/Etiwanda, Calif.).
Ike Diogu, the 2005 Pac-10 Player of the Year and a consensus second-team All-American this past season, has declared for the NBA Draft but has indicated he will not hire an agent and has until June 21 to make a final decision on his status. Besides Diogu, ASU is scheduled to return six lettermen from last year's 18-win team, including seniors Tyrone Jackson and Allen Morill. Juniors on the 2005-06 roster are expected to be Serge Angounou, Kevin Kruger and Bryson Krueger along with sophomore Craig Austin.
