Women's Swimming and Diving Sends Nine to NCAA Championships

The Arizona State University women's swimming and diving team sends eight swimmers and one diver to the 2005 Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships held March, 17-19 in West Lafayette, Ind. The women return three swimmers and one diver from last year's NCAA meet in Agnes Kovacs, Florencia Szigeti, Erin Baldinger and Trisha Tumlinson. The Sun Devil add four new faces to the NCAA squad in Christine Creek, Caitlin Andrew, Sarah A Fischer, Kathryn Hennessy and Heidi Schmidt.

Women 2004-05 Season
The women's swimming and diving team finished the 2004-05 season with a 5-4-1 overall record and 1-4-1 in the Pacific-10 Conference. The team finished with 926.50 points to earn a sixth-place finish at the 2004 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. The Sun Devil women had two individual Pac-10 Champions, Caitlin Andrew in the 100 butterfly and Trisha Tumlinson on the platform event.

Women Last Year at NCAAs
The Arizona State University women's swimming and diving team travelled six swimmers and one diver to the 2004 NCAA meet where they finished 14th overall. Trisha Tumlinson earned the Sun Devils top finish last season with a second-place finish on the platform event. The swimmers were led by Agnes Kovacs who earned five All-American honors with a individual finishes in the 200m breaststroke (5th) and the 100m breaststroke and 200m IM where she came in sixth-place. Szigeti swam to a ninth-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a school-record time of 1:46.15. Szigeti also set a new school-record in the 100 freestyle event in the opening leg of the 400 freestyle relay. Erin Baldinger swam in the 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle events for the Sun Devil women at last years' NCAA meet as well as the 400m medley and 400m freestyle relay teams. Baldinger set a personal-best time in the 50 freestyle that put her sixth in the Sun Devil record books.

New Faces at the NCAAs
The Sun Devil women are sending four swimmers to the NCAA meet for the first time, including two freshman. They are led by freshman Caitlin Andrew who set two school-records at the Pac-10 meet last week in the 100 backstroke (54.10) and 100 butterfly (52.64) events. She claimed the Pac-10 title in the 100 butterfly for the Sun Devils. Christine Creek makes her first appearance at the NCAA meet after finishing seventh at the Pac-10 meet in the 200 breaststroke. Heidi Schmidt will represent the Sun Devil women at the NCAA meet this season, finishing in third-place in the 100 breaststroke event at the Pac-10 Championships. With that time she moved into third on ASU's all-time top-ten. Freshman Sarah A Fischer heads to the NCAA meet, representing the women in the distance freestyle events, she has the season's top-times in the 500 and 1650 freestyle events. Junior Kathryn Hennessy joins Fisher in the distance events, holding the season's second fastest times in the 500 and 1650 freestyle events. She holds the fifth spot on the ASU all-time top-ten list in the 1650 freestyle event.

Tumlinson at NCAA Zone E Diving Regional
Senior All-American Trisha Tumlinson was in action over the weekend at the NCAA Zone E Diving Regional. On the final day of competition, Tumlinson took the platform title with a score of 448.45. She earned third-place honors in the one-meter springboard event and seventh in the three-meter event. Her scores qualified her for competition in all three diving events at the NCAA Championship meet.

Andrew Has the Answer
Freshman Caitlin Andrew made her mark on the Arizona State University swimming and diving program over the weekend, as she became the first woman to claim a Pac-10 title in the butterfly event, winning the 100 butterfly on Friday evening. Her Pac-10 title swim of 52.64 qualified her for the NCAA meet and set a new ASU school-record. She hit the water again in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in a school-record setting time of 54.10 to break her second school-record of the night.

Diving High
Senior All-American Trisha Tumlinson set a new school-record on the platform event at the Texas Invitational with a score of 471.8Trisha Tumlinson followed up with her second Pac-10 title on the platform event with a score of 443.50. Tumlinson finished her Pac-10 career a three-time champion, having won the 2004 3-meter title and was a back-to-back platform champion. Cassidy Farwell set a personal-best on the 3-meter springboard event with a score of 389.75.

Pac-10 Swimmer and Diver of the Month
Arizona State University senior diver Trisha Tumlinson earned the Sun Devils first Pac-10 Diver of the Month honor for the month of December. Tumlinson attained a personal best score of 471.80 on the platform at the University of Texas Invitational on Dec. 2-4, good for second place in the event. She also took second in the one-meter springboard with a score of 303.10 and third in the three-meter springboard (490.30). Freshman Caitlin Andrew followed up as the Pac-10 Co-Swimmer of the Month for January. Andrew had individual wins against California and Stanford. She won the 100 butterfly against Cal in 54.0 seconds. Andrew took the 100 back in 54.9 seconds against Cal and in 55.8 versus Stanford. All three times qualified for NCAA consideration. Andrew was also a member of the Sun Devil 200 medley relay team that beat California, swimming the 50 fly split in 24.0 seconds.

Caitlin Andrew - Freshman -- San Antonio, Texas
One of the top freshmen in the country...won the Pac-10 title in the 100 butterfly...her championship performance set a new school-record (52.64)...finished third at the Pac-10 Championships in the 100 backstroke (54.10) setting a school-record in that event... swam a personal-best in the 100 freestyle (50.27) at the Pac-10 Championships to finish seventh...that put her fourth on ASU's all-time top-ten list...was named Pac-10 Co-Swimmer of the Month for January...has the second-fastest 100 butterfly time in the nation and the 16th-fastest 100 backstroke time.

Erin Baldinger - Junior (Returning All-American) -- Phoenix, Ariz.
Enters her second NCAA meet for the Sun Devil women...swam a season-best in the 50 freestyle at the Texas Invitational...has the second fastest 100 backstroke time of the season (57.13)...swam the opening leg of the 400 medley relay team that finished fourth at the Pac-10 Championships and are second on ASU's all-time top-five list...ranks sixth in the Sun Devil record books in the 50 freestyle event... earned honorable mention All-American honors in the 400m medley relay and the 400m freestyle relay...set a personal-best in the preliminaries in the 50 freestyle at the 2004 NCAA Championships...also swam the 100 backstroke at the NCAAs.

Christine Creek - Sophomore -- Simi Valley, Calif.
Competing in her first NCAA Championships for the Sun Devils...placed seventh at the Pac-10 Championships in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:16.34...swam a personal-best in the 200 breaststroke at the Texas Invitational (2:15.67)...her time in the 200 breaststroke puts her fifth on ASU's all-time top-ten list...placed 20th at the Pac-10 Championships in the 100 breaststroke...her preliminary time of 1:04.07 is a season-best in the 100 breaststroke event.

Sarah A Fischer - Freshman -- Boulder, Colo.
Will compete in her first NCAA Championships for the Sun Devils...ASU's strongest distance swimmer...has the season top-times in the 500 and 1650 freestyle events...swam a personal-best in the 500 freestyle at the Texas Invitational (4:48.59) finishing in fourth-place...took second-place in the 1650 freestyle at the Texas Invitational with a personal-best, 16:31.52...her 1650 freestyle time puts her ninth on ASU's all-time top-ten...placed 16th at the Pac-10 Championships in the 1650 freestyle and 20th in the 500 freestyle.

Kathryn Hennessy - Junior - Kansas City, Mo.
Competing in her first NCAA Championships for the Sun Devils...one of the top distance freestyle swimmers on the team...has the season top-time in the 1000 freestyle event and is second in the 500 and 1650 freestyle...finished eighth at the 2005 Pac-10 Championships in the 1650 freestyle...took ninth in the 500 freestyle at the Texas Invitational swimming a season-best 4:50.12...finished third at the Texas Invitational in the 1650 freestyle in a season-best time of 16:33.42...ranks fifth on ASU's all-time top-ten list in the 1650 freestyle.

Ágnes Kovács - Senior (Returning All-American) -- Budapest, Hungary
One of the top breaststrokers in the world...swam into individual first-place honors in every dual meet she competed in this season...finished second at the Pac-10 Championships in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events and took fifth-place in the 200 IM...swam season-bests in each event...has the fifth-fastest time in the 100 breaststroke, the sixth-fastest time in the 200 breaststroke and the 17th fastest time in the 200 IM in the nation...has competed in three NCAA Championships for the Sun Devils...is the school-record holder in the 200 breaststroke, 200 IM and 400 IM and is second all-time in the 100 breaststroke...is a member of the school-record setting 800 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay teams...scored 40 points at the 2004 NCAA Championships...placed fifth in the 200 breaststroke and sixth in both the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM at the NCAAs.

Heidi Schmidt - Junior --Visalia, Calif.
Transferred to ASU this season...competing in her first NCAA Championships...swam a season-best 1:02.10 in the 100 breaststroke at the Pac-10 Championships to finish third...her time puts her third on ASU's all-time top-ten list...finished 11th at the Pac-10 Championships in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:16.28...finished 21st in the 200 IM...finished fifth at the Texas Invitational in the 100 breaststroke...finished 14th at the Texas Invitational in the 200 IM swimming a season-best time of 2:03.53...has the 20th-fastest time in the 100 breaststroke and the 42nd-fastest time in the 200 breaststroke in the nation.

Florencia Szigeti - Senior (Returning All-American) --Mendoza, Argentina
The Sun Devils top sprint freestyler...ranked in the top 50 in the nation in three events...swam season-bests in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events at the Pac-10 Championships...finished fifth overall in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.81...her preliminary time of 49.77 was a season-best...took seventh-place honors in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.60...swam into eighth-place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.15...ASU's school-record holder in the 100 and 200 freestyle events and is second all-time in the 50 freestyle...has the 19th, 31st and 33rd fastest times in the nation in the 100, 200 and 50 freestyle events...is a member of the school-record 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay teams...was the 2004 Pac-10 Champion in the 200 freestyle...finished ninth at the 2004 NCAA Championships in the 200 freestyle...swam a personal-best in the 50 freestyle at NCAAs and set the school-record in the 100 freestyle with her opening leg swim of the 400 freestyle relay.

Trisha Tumlinson - Senior (Returning All-American) -- Spring, Texas
One of the most decorated women's divers in school history...won the Pac-10 Championship on the platform event at the 2005 Pac-10 Championships...took third-place on the three-meter springboard and sixth-place on the one-meter event...won the platform title at the NCAA Zone E Regional Diving meet...took third in the one-meter event and seventh in the three-meter...set a personal-best and school-record on the platform at the Texas Invitational with a score of 471.80...is the school-record holder in the one-meter dual, one-meter championships, three-meter championships and platform events...named the Pac-10 Women's Diver of the Month for December...earned first-team All-American honors on platform and honorable mention recognition on the one-meter springboard...was the 2004 NCAA runner-up on platform...placed ninth on the one-meter event at the NCAAs.
