Five Baseball Player Earn Pac-10 All-Academic Honors

TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Five Arizona State University baseball players have been named to the 2004 Pac-10 Conference All-Academic Team as announced Wednesday by conference commissioner Tom Hansen. Ryan McKenna, Garrett Schoenberger, Erik Averill, Tuffy Gosewisch and Seth Dhaenens all eared academic all-conference honors after posting a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average.

Outfielder Ryan McKenna (Elgin, Ill.) and catcher Garrett Schoenberger (Juneau, Alaska) were both named first-team All-Pac-10 Academic. McKenna (3.58 GPA, Interdisciplinary Studies) graduated in May and has been a steady performer for the Sun Devils over the last three seasons. McKenna is hitting .333 (12-for-36) this season, including a current stretch going 7-for-12 (.583) during a current four-game hitting streak. McKenna was also named first-team All-Pac-10 Academic as sophomore in 2002.

Schoenberger (3.51 GPA, Marketing) is a former walk-on who is considered one of the team leaders. He graduated in May with a degree in marketing and recently served as the president of the ASU student-athlete group, SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee). He was also voted as the Pac-10 SAAC co-chairperson to represent ASU in the Pac-10 student-athlete meetings.

Sophomore left-hander Erik Averill (Orange, Calif.) and junior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch (Scottsdale, Ariz.) were both named to second-team All-Pac-10 Academic. Averill (3.43 GPA, Marketing) is one of ASU's top relievers, posting a 4-2 record with two saves and a 4.48 ERA this season. Gosewisch (3.31 GPA, Marketing) has started 52 of 53 games behind the plate for the Sun Devils. He is hitting .346 (62-for-179) with 13 doubles and two home runs. He has been named one of 15 semifinalists for the Johnny Bench Catcher of the Year Award. Gosewisch earned honorable mention academic honors in 2003.

Redshirt freshman Seth Dhaenens (Chandler, Ariz.) earned honorable mention honors for his 3.05 GPA as a aeronautical engineering major. Dhaenens is a backup infielder who is hitting .271 (23-for-85) with three doubles and seven RBI.
