Sun Devils Lead After Two Rounds Of Thunderbird Invitational

April 9, 2004

Arizona State shot a 28-under 548 (270-278) and leads by 10 strokes over three schools after two rounds of the ASU/Thunderbird Invitational, as 2003 NCAA champion Alejandro Canizares also leads the field by shooting 13-under 131 through 36 holes, all played on Friday.

Peter Tomasulo of 16th-ranked California carded a course and tournament record 11-under 61 (29-32) in the opening round, one stroke better than the 62 shot by 2000 U.S. Amateur champion Jeff Quinney on April 18, 1999. Quinney shot a 15-under 201 that year, the third-best mark in Thunderbird Invitational history. Tomasula (61-72) is tied for second with ASU's Kendall Critchfield at 11-under 133. Critchfield, playing for the ASU Maroon squad, shot a 9-under 63 in the first round and had a double-eagle on the par-5 14th hole, which was his finishing hole in the shotgun-start format. The 63 marked a collegiate best for Critchfield, whose previous best of 65 came on April 11, 2003, in the second round of the Thunderbird Invitational. He shot a 2-under 70 in the second round.

ASU shot a 270 in the first round led by Canizares (65) and senior Chez Reavie (66). Canizares' 65 and Reavie's 66 matched season-bests. Reavie is tied for sixth at 8-under 136 (66-70).

Ninth-ranked Arizona shot a 15-under 273 in the first round, led by Nathan Tyler and Chris Nallen, as they both shot 6-under 66. New Mexico, ranked 17th by the Golf Coaches Association, also carded a 273 in the opening round. Texas Tech's Oscar Floren carded an 8-under 64 in the first round and is at 8-under 136 (64-72), which is tied for sixth. New Mexico, Arizona and USC all are tied for second at 18-under 558.

Arizona State has won the event four of the past five years and 12 times overall. It has finished first or second every year since 1994, a streak of 10 straight tournaments. The last Sun Devil to win the event was Paul Casey in 2000 with a 9-under 207

Saturday's tee times begin at 7 a.m.

ASU already has won three tournaments on the year, as it took home championship honors at New Mexico's Tucker Intercollegiate (Sept. 12-13), UNLV's Southern Highlands Championship (March 12-14) and the National Invitational (March 28-30) held in Tucson. It last won three tournaments in 2000-2001, while its last four-win season was in 1999-2000.

TOURNAMENT RECORDS: ASU's 40-under 824 set the tournament record last year, topping USC by eight strokes, as the Trojans 32-under 832 tied for the second-best mark in tournament history. Bret Guetz of TCU set the tournament record in 2002 with a 16-under 200.

RANKINGS: ASU entered play this week fifth in the Golf Coaches Association poll, sixth in the Golfstat poll and seventh according to Golfweek. Chez Reavie is ranked 15th by Golfweek and Alejandro Canizares is No. 31.

NEXT COMPETITION: Arizona State will compete in the Pac-10 Championships April 25-28 in Tucson. The Sun Devils have won the league title 11 times, including a league-record six straight titles from 1995-2000. ASU coach Randy Lein has led ASU to seven of those Pac-10 titles.
