The Arizona State men's golf team is tied for ninth after two rounds of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships held at the Karsten Creek Course in Stillwater, Okla. ASU shot a 20-over 308 and is at 38-over 614, 16 shots back of tournament-leading UCLA (303-295=598). Host Oklahoma State is in second at 23-over 599 (299-300). The 72-hole tournament concludes Thursday and Friday with 18 holes each day.
Alejandro Canizares, the Pac-10 co-Freshman of the Year, shot a 2-under 70 and is tied for fourth with a 3-over 147. Canizares had a 71.64 stroke average entering the tournament, the best by a Sun Devil freshman, as Todd Demsey had a 72.10 average in 1991-92. He is just six shots off the lead.
Junior Chez Reavie, the 2001 U.S. Public Links Champion, is at 7-over 151 (74-77) and tied for 24th.
Sophomore Jesse Mueller, the 2001 Arizona Amateur Champion, is at 14-over 158 (80-78), as is Kendall Critchfield (75-83).
Brady Stockton, the 2002 Pacific Northwest Golf Association champion, is at 26-over 170 (84-86).
Arizona State has finished in the top five at the NCAAs in five of the past eight years and won national titles in 1990 and 1996. It has qualified for the NCAA Championship in 10 of head coach Randy Lein's 11 seasons and has eight top-10 finishes, the most in the nation in that time. ASU also is the only Pac-10 team to win a NCAA title in the past eight years.
