Six Baseball Players Named To Pac-10 Academic Team

June 21, 2002

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Adding to an already impressive legacy of fine academic standards, the Arizona State baseball program had six student-athletes named to the Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic baseball team when it was released earlier this week from the conference office in Walnut Creek, Calif.

Sophomore Ryan McKenna was a first-team selection, while senior catcher Cesar Castillo and sophomore relief pitcher Aaron Klusman were second-team selections. Ryan Schroyer, Nick Walsh and Mike Esposito were all honorable mention all-academic selections as well. ASU has now had 11 selections to the Pac-10 All-Academic first team since 1999.

To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant substitute.

McKenna, an outfielder from Elgin, Ill., played in 39 games, making 20 starts, and hit .265 with three doubles, 15 RBI and one home run. McKenna has maintained an impressive 3.65 GPA as an Interdisciplinary Studies major.

Castillo (Yuma), ASU starter behind the plate, had a great senior campaign, hitting .287 with eight doubles, one home run and 20 RBI. Castillo has a 3.21 GPA in Secondary Education and will begin student teaching to become a teacher and coach in the Phoenix area.

Klusman was (Phoenix) 0-0 with a 6.45 ERA while pitching in 15 games this year for the Sun Devils. He recorded one save and had 22 strikeouts in 22.1 innings of action. The sophomore has a cumulative 3.49 GPA as a Management major.
