TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State junior outfielder Travis Buck was selected 36th overall in the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft to headline a list of seven Sun Devils selected during the two-day, 50-round draft.
Senior first baseman Jeff Larish (5th round, Detroit Tigers), senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch (11th round, Philadelphia Phillies), senior right-handed pitcher Jason Urquidez (17th round, Arizona Diamondbacks), junior left-handed pitcher Erik Averill (20th round, Detroit Tigers), senior infielder Joey Hooft (20th round, Texas Rangers) and junior left-handed pitcher Brett Bordes (24th round, Detroit Tigers) were also selected.
The seven draft picks marks the 10th time in the last 12 years that ASU has had at least six players selected during the annual June Amateur Draft. Since the inception of the draft in 1965, ASU has had 339 players selected, most among all colleges. In addition to having seven current Sun Devils drafted, nine of ASU's 12 players that have signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) heard their names called during the first 42 rounds.
Buck (Richland, Wash.) is hitting .389 (100-for-257) with 73 runs scored, 22 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 38 RBI and 24 stolen bases. He became just the 21st player in ASU history to record 100 hits in a season and the fourth to record 100 hits, 20 doubles and 20 steals in the same season. In his three years as a Sun Devil, Buck improved his draft status drastically, moving up from a 23rd round draft choice (700th overall) by the Seattle Mariners in 2002.
Larish (Tempe, Ariz.) was selected 150th overall and was one of three Devils that were drafted by the Detroit Tigers. After being drafted in the 13th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, Larish returned for his senior season and has helped lead ASU to the Super Regionals for the second time in the last three years. He is hitting .320 (71-for-222) with 19 home runs and 61 RBI. He ranks second in ASU history with 47 home runs and is tied for fourth with 229 career RBI.
Gosewisch (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was drafted for the first time in his career as an 11th-round selection by the Philadelphia Phillies. Only the second three-year starting catcher in ASU history, Gosewisch is hitting .323 (71-for-220) with 15 doubles, six home runs and leads the team with 67 RBI. The two-time Johnny Bench Catcher of the Year semifinalist has thrown out 25 of 64 attempted base stealers this season (39%) and was named the Co-Most Outstanding Player of the Tempe Regional last weekend.
Urquidez (Simi Valley, Calif.) was drafted for the third time in his career as a 17th-round selection of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Urquidez was also selected in the 48th round by the Tampa Bay Devils Rays in 2002 out of Central Arizona College and was an 11th-round selection by the Cincinnati Reds last season. In two seasons as a Sun Devil, Urquidez has gone 21-7 with a 3.73 ERA. He is 9-4 this season with a 4.05 ERA.
Averill (Orange, Calif.) was taken 600th overall in the 20th round by the Tigers. The left-handed pitcher leads the pitching staff this season going 9-4 with a 3.77 ERA and has recorded a team-high four complete games. In three seasons at ASU, Averill is 21-10 with a 4.14 ERA in 67 appearances (36 starts).
Hooft (Reno, Nev.) was drafted for the first time during his career after spending his first three college seasons at the University of Miami (Fla.). The versatile infielder was the 20th round draft pick (609 overall) by the Texas Rangers. Heading into his fourth Super Regional, Hooft is hitting .279 (46-for-165) with one home run and 26 RBI. He has started 43 games this season, including 32 at third base, six at designated hitter, four at second base and one in left field.
Bordes (Mesa, Ariz.) was the final Sun Devil taken when he was picked in the 24th round (720 overall) by the Tigers. The junior left-hander is 5-5 with three saves and a 3.88 ERA while appearing in 32 games this season. His 32 appearances rank seventh in ASU's single-season record books and his 72 career appearances are also seventh in the career record books. As a reliever this season, Bordes is 5-1 with a 2.98 ERA and over his last 24 appearances out of the bullpen has allowed only nine runs in 39.2 IP (2.04 ERA).
