Myers up for national player of the year -- Junior Casey Myers (Casa Grande) has been added to Baseball America's players to watch for their National Player of the Year award. The catcher has certainly put up impressive numbers in 2000, leading the conference in batting average (.428), RBI (60), hits (59) and on-base percentage (.525). Myers hit his 10th homer of the season on Sunday vs. Stanford - a three-run blast in the first inning. He has been named conference player of the week three times during his career at ASU. Myers is leading the squad in multiple-hit games (19) and multiple-RBI games (17). He has hit safely in 31 of 36 games this season. Myers has notched 12 two-out RBI this year. He is hitting .466 with runners in scoring position and .481 with runners on base.
Jones leads conference with 19 homeruns -- Senior outfielder Mitch Jones (Orem, Utah) hit homerun No. 19 in ASU's 11-6 win over Stanford on Sunday. The slugger leads the team and conference in runs scored (56), homeruns (19), total bases (125) and slugging percentage (.833). Jones has tallied 16 multiple-hit games as well as 14 multiple-RBI games. His 19 homeruns is the most by a single ASU player since 1994 when Scott Shores hit 21. Jones is currently hitting at a .353 clip and is second in doubles (11) and RBI (58). He leads the conference and nation with 18 homeruns. Over half of his hits (32) have been for extra bases. Jones has notched 16 two-out RBI as well as 15 multiple-hit games.
Switzer takes tough loss to stanford -- Sophomore lefty Jon Switzer took a tough loss on Friday night vs. Stanford despite a solid outing on the mound. Switzer went 8.1 innings allowed only five runs on six hits with six strikeouts (four of the five runs scored were scored on homeruns). Switzer has a 6-1 record with an impressive 2.93 ERA. He leads the team with 72 strikeouts and is holding opponent batters to a .178 average at the plate. He is ranked fifth in the conference in ERA (2.93) and strikeouts (72) and third in opposing batting average (.178) and innings pitched (70.2).
Pezely and Doble shine over weekend -- Sophomore Franco Pezely (Taylorsville, Utah) picked up his third win of the season on Sunday pitching two shutout innings in relief as ASU defeated Stanford 11-6. The lefty did not allow a hit while striking out two. On Saturday, Pezely pitched 2.0 innings allowing one run while striking out five in a solid relief outing. Junior Eric Doble also notched his third win on the year with a stellar relief performance in Saturday's 10-6 victory. The right-hander pitched 2.1 shutout innings allowing only one hit while fanning three . Doble came back on Sunday to close out the game going 2.1 innings allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts. For the year, Doble is now 3-1 with three saves and a 3.21 ERA. He is tied for second in the league in saves (3).
PHelps comes up big vs. Stanford -- Junior first baseman Jeff Phelps (Yuma, Ariz.) came up big against the Cardinal on Saturday afternoon. With Stanford leading 6-5 in the seventh, Phelps hit a two-run blast to put the Devils ahead (he had been 0-for-10 before the AB). He is second on the squad with a .374 average (sixth in the conference) and has an on-base percentage of .491 (second in Pac-10). His 27 walks ranks third in the league. Phelps is batting particularly well vs. lefties coming in with a .440 average. He has notched nine two-out RBI as well as 14 multiple-hit games.

AIN'T LOVE GRAND -- Right-handed pitcher Luke Field (Littleton, Co.) proposed to his girlfriend in a very unique way over the holidays. On New Year's Eve, Field and his girlfriend, Casse Watkins (Ellinwood, Kan.), went to Packard Stadium. None of the stadium lights were on as they made their way to the press box. Field had made arrangement with a manager to be there. When the couple got to the press box, the manager turned on the field lights. Spelled out in bats and baseballs were the words "Will you marry me?". Field's girlfriend said yes. No date has been set yet.

Esposito out for the year -- Freshman right-handed pitcher Mike Esposito (Las Vegas, Nev.) had "Tommy John" surgery on his right elbow on March 30 to repair the ulnar collateral ligament. The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama. Andrews has also performed the same surgery on David Wells, John Smoltz, Steve Karsay and Kerry Woods. Esposito had been the Devils Friday night starter at the beginning of the year.

INJURY REPORT -- Senior Will Waldrip is experiencing soreness in his left elbow and will have an MRI on April 10. He is out indefinitely. Freshman RHP Mike Esposito had successful Tommy John surgery on March 30 and is out for the rest of the season.
