This Week -- The 10-6 and No. 22 Arizona State University Sun Devils prepare for the 2004 Pacific-10 Conference Championships this Saturday, March 20 at the University of Arizona at 6:00 p.m. MT at the McKale Center. ASU finished third last year at the 2003 conference meet, its highest finish since 1999 (3rd). Sophomore Ashley Kelly will attempt to win her sixth straight all-around title at this meet. Kelly owns titles in the UNO's Classic, versus Arizona, in the Masters Classic (tie) at Nebraska, against Eastern Michigan and versus Minnesota. She tied the school record of five in a row by Tina Brinkman (1994).
ASU In The Rankings -- Arizona State is ranked No. 22 this week. ASU debuted at No. 9 in the GymInfo rankings, based on the preseason coaches poll released Dec. 14. Pac-10 Conference foe UCLA was selected to win the NCAA crown with 938 votes and 27 first-place bids. ASU received 628 votes and was neighbored in the standings by No. 6 Stanford (751), No. 11 Oregon State (447) and No. 15 Washington (370). Arizona (17th, 290) and California (21st, 157) rounded out the list of Pac-10 teams in the top-25. For info access http://www.troester.com/gym/.
ASU Faced Nation's Finest -- Arizona State faced nine (almost half) of the nation's top 22 teams in 2004 according to the preseason coaches poll. Of the squads the Sun Devils met in 2004, UCLA was No. 1, Utah was No. 4, Stanford was No. 6, Nebraska was No. 8, Oregon State was No. 11, Washington was No. 15, Arizona was No. 17, California was No. 21 and Minnesota was No. 22. Six of those meetings were at home in Wells Fargo Arena.
Last Week -- ASU beat Minnesota, 198.125-197.7. Ashley Kelly tied a school record with her fifth-straight all-around title versus Minnesota, scoring a 39.85, including two 10.0's on vault and beam. Kelly tied Tina Brinkman, who won five in a row in 1994. Kelly's 10.0 on vault was her third career and second of the season. Her 10.0 on beam was her second career perfect score in that discipline. The win was Kelly's 10th career title. Maggie Germaine was second in the all-around (39.8), with a career-high performance. She scored the second 10.0 vault of her career and followed that with her sixth career 10.0 on floor (4th of the '04 campaign). Cassandra Jusino posted a career-high 9.95 on bars (2nd). Kari Muth recorded the first 10.0 of her career on beam.
Meet Highlights In 2004 -- ASU-Eastern Michigan (3/5/04): Ashley Kelly scored 39.8, winning her fourth straight all-around title in leading ASU to a school record 198.45 and a win over Eastern Michigan (194.875). Kelly won three events -- vault (9.95), bars (9.925-T), and beam (10.0). The 10.0 on beam was her first on that event and the fifth overall of her career. ASU smashed the school record on bars, scoring 49.6, breaking the old mark of 49.525 (2/6/04 vs. OSU). April Boone set a career-high (9.9) and tied for second on vault with Maggie Germaine and Cassandra Jusino. Kelly tied Kari Muth, Lauren Powell and Jusino for first on bars at 9.925. Muth and Germaine tied first on floor with 10.0's. It was Muth's first perfect score of her career and the seventh for Germaine. ASU-Arizona (2/27/04), ASU-Masters Classic (2/29/04): ASU used school records on vault (49.65) and floor (49.825) and a near-school record of 49.5 on bars to beat No. 11 Arizona, 197.7-196.225. The Sun Devils posted 17 career or season-highs, en route to posting the fifth-best team score ever. Ashley Kelly won the AA with a school record 39.875. She tied her own school mark set last year and won her seventh career all-around title. ASU posted two 10.0's on vault, led by Kelly's third career 10.0 and second of the meet. Cassandra Jusino also chipped in with a 10.0, the first of her career. Kelly and Kari Muth tied for first on bars, scoring 9.925's. Kelly scored the second 10.0 of the night, tying for first on floor with Germaine. It was Germaine's second straight 10 on floor
and the fifth of her career on floor. Then, on Sunday, ASU scored a 195.625, its second-highest road score of the year at the Masters Classic in Nebraska. Kelly tied for the all-around (39.55) title and won her second AA in three days and eighth of her career. She won bars (9.95) and tied for first on floor (9.875). Germaine tied Kelly for first on floor at 9.875. ASU-Utah/Air Force (2/20/04): ASU scored its second-highest team score of the season, a 196.5, but lost to Utah (196.85) in the UNO's Classic. Air Force was third (190.6). Ashley Kelly, who was ill, won the all-around (39.75). It was her sixth career all-around title. On vault, Kelly and Carla DeMartini scored season-highs of 9.875 and 9.825, respectively. ASU scored a 48.85 on vault, ASU's third-best of the season. Kelly tied for first at 9.925 on bars, a season-high. DeMartini also set a season-high on bars with a 9.875 (T-5th). ASU's 49.35 on bars was its second-highest score of the season. ASU won beam with a 49.125. Kelly won the event with a 9.975, a season and career-high. Germaine scored a perfect 10.0 and tied for first on floor. ASU-Washington (2/13/04): ASU was forced to count two falls on the meet's first event (uneven bars) and did not recover, losing to No. 18 Washington, 197.325-193.075, at Bank of America Arena. 17th-ranked ASU did not win an event title. Freshman Cassandra Jusino was a bright spot, finishing in a tie for third in the all-around with a career-high 39.45. ASU's first three competitors - April Boone (8.8), Carla DeMartini (9.1) and Maggie Germaine (9.025) - had falls on bars. Jusino rallied ASU with a 9.8 while Ashley Kelly and Kari Muth followed with scores of 9.875 and 9.825, respectively. ASU scored a season-low on bars (47.625). It did not get much better for the Sun Devils on the floor exercise as they scored season-low 48.1. ASU-Oregon State (2/6/04): ASU used a school record 49.525 on bars and many career and season-high individual scores to beat No. 20 Oregon State, 196.975-196. 7. ASU's team score of 196.975 was a season-high. Ashley Kelly won beam and placed second on bars, winning the all-around title with a season-high 39.575. Maggie Germaine posted a season-high 9.9 on vault (1st). Cassandra Jusino scored a season-high 9.875 (T-2nd). ASU scored a season-high 49.025 on vault and set a school record on bars (49.525), breaking the mark of 49.500 set last year (Kentucky, 3/21). Kari Muth had a career-high 9.95 on bars, placing first. Jusino then scored 9.925 for ASU's second straight career-high on bars, tying for second with Kelly (9.925). Kelly won the beam with a season-high 9.95. Muth's 9.85 on beam was a season-high. Winning first-place on floor with a career-high was Germaine (9.975). ASU-UCLA/CS-Fullerton (2/1/04): ASU scored its highest total of the year and placed second in a three-way meet at UCLA. The Sun Devils scored a 195.925., losing to the No. 6 Bruins (197.550) and defeating CS-Fullerton (191.950). Ashley Kelly placed third in the all-around, scoring a 39.5. She tied for second (9.85, tied season-high) on vault, placed fifth on uneven bars (9.85), fourth on beam (9.9, tied season-high) and fourth on floor (9.9, tied season-high). Maggie Germaine had her best meet of '04, scoring 39.05 in the all-around, tying for fourth with Cassandra Jusino. Carla DeMartini also set a season-high (9.775) on floor while Amber Giorgianni set a season-high on beam (9.775). Muth also set a season-high on beam (9.8). ASU-Cal/SJSU/Utah State (1/23/04): ASU went on the road for the first time in 2004 and turned in a sub-par performance, finishing second of four at the California Invitational meet. Cal won the meet, scoring 195.95. The Sun Devils were second (194.25), followed by Utah State (194.15) and San Jose State (193.875). ASU suffered numerous falls, including one on vault by senior Maggie Germaine (8.525), two on balance beam by senior Amber Giorgianni (9.125) and freshman Cassandra Jusino (9.2) and one on floor by Ashley Kelly (9.25). ASU's top finisher on vault was Kelly with a 9.85, good for third-place. Kelly tied for first on bars with a 9.9. Kelly and Dodd tied for first on beam with 9.9's. Jusino placed second on floor (9.9).
ASU-Stanford (1/18/04): In the season opener, ASU upset No. 6-ranked Stanford, 195.825-195.5 at Wells Fargo Arena. The victory snapped a nine-meet losing streak against Stanford, the first win since the April, 2000 Pacific-10 Championships which were hosted by ASU. Frosh Cassandra Jusino capped a marvelous debut by placing third in the all-around (39.35) and winning the vault title (9.825). She placed third in both the floor (9.85) and the beam (9.85). Jusino averaged 9.8375 in four events in her first meet. Ashley Kelly won all-around honors, scoring a 39.525. Kelly won the beam (9.9) and bars (9.95) titles and placed second on floor (9.9). Lauren Powell, who missed the 2003 season with an injury, placed fifth on bars (9.875), sixth on floor (9.8) and seventh on beam (9.775).
