TEMPE – Colorado’s twin sisters Hope and Faith Leyba both converted headers in the 18-yard box to fuel the Buffaloes 2-0 win over Sun Devil Soccer inside Sun Devil Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The two teams went back-and-forth for the first 30 minutes of the contest, before Hope Leyba scored during the 33’ – becoming just the third student-athlete in the Big 12 with 10-or-more goals this season – to push Colorado (12-4-1, 6-3-0) ahead. Nearly 30 minutes later, Hope’s sister, Faith, also converted a header for a CU goal when she was on the receiving end of a free kick during the 62’.
Throughout the match’s 90 minutes, the Arizona State offense laid on a relentless offensive pursuit, though, as the Sun Devils were credited with nine second half shot attempts – after having just five in the first half – and forced Colorado goalkeeper Brooke Goerish to make five second-half saves to add to her two during the first half.
Scoring Summary
33’, CU, 1-0, Goal by Hope Leyba, Assist by Jordan Whiteaker
62’, CU, 2-0, Goal by Faith Leyba, Assist by Caley Swierenga
From Head Coach Graham Winkworth
“Congratulations to Colorado, that’s an excellent team. You can see we’ve played two top ten teams (in the RPI) this weekend and you can see why they are both ranked that highly. They’re both very clinical in the penalty area. Congratulations to them and good luck with the rest of their season.”
