STILLWATER, Okla. – The Sun Devil Soccer program got back to its winning ways on Friday night, when Arizona State went into Neal Patterson Stadium and walked out with a 2-1 win over Oklahoma State, giving the Sun Devils their first win against the Cowgirls in Stillwater since Sept. 5, 2014.

It took just 20 minutes for Arizona State to break the 0-0 score when Miki Hayashi sent a corner kick into the box, where an unmarked Lucy Fazackerley headed the ball past three Cowgirl defenders before an outstretching Sierra Bergen pushed the loose ball into the bottom-left corner of the net for the Sun Devils’ first goal. The goal marked the third consecutive match – and second straight with Bergen scoring first – ASU has scored first.

The Arizona State defense did a great job of limiting the Oklahoma State offense during the second half to maintain the one-goal lead, until freshman defender Gator DeMark sent a shot – from 24 yards out – over a backpedaling Cowgirl goalkeeper and into the top-left corner of the frame for her first career collegiate goal. The goal gave the Sun Devils a multi-goal performance for the eighth time this season.

Izzy Duink, a 5-foot-8 sophomore out of Roseville, Calif., nearly earned a 90-minute clean sheet in her first career start in net, but a Sun Devil defender was called for a handball in the 18-yard box, resulting in a Cowgirl penalty kick attempt which Laudan Wilson converted with just 50 seconds remaining in regulation.

From Head Coach Graham Winkworth

“I was very pleased with both the attitude and effort of the girls tonight. This league is a real gauntlet, and winning is very difficult with so many top 25 and top 50 teams. Winning on the road is even harder and the girls were fantastic tonight.

“We had the majority of the possession during the match, but to be honest, the organization and counter attacking of Oklahoma State was causing us some real issues early in the first half. We scored a lovely goal to take the lead, and I felt our possession was more dangerous as the first half progressed. The second half, it was very important for us to keep our shape defensively and we did a solid job of that. I was very happy with the bravery and quality of our midfield players to get on the ball when they were man marked all night. The front two did a great job towards the end of the match holding the ball up and taking some pressure away from our back line.

“It was a great team performance. Izzy (Duink) did a great job in goal making her full debut and nearly even saved the penalty. I was delighted for our hometown girl Gator (DeMark) to score her first collegiate goal, too. When you consider we had four freshman and a redshirt freshman on the pitch at the end of the match, I am excited not only for the victory tonight, but also the long-term future of ASU soccer.”
