HAMILTON, N.Y. – Completing a sweep of the Colgate Volleyball Classic, No. 7 Sun Devil Volleyball beat Villanova in straight sets (25-15, 25-13, 25-14) with a season-high 14 blocks on Saturday afternoon at the Reid Athletic Center.
Notable stats
- Arizona State (5-1) held Villanova (3-2) to a -.010 hitting percentage, the lowest of the season. The Wildcats had 32 errors in the match.
- ASU hit .377 in the fourth sweep of the season.
- With a season-high 14 blocks, the Sun Devils had double-digit blocks for the second time this season (also in the win over Texas). Leading the blocking effort was junior middle blocker Zoey Burgess with five, matching her season best.
- The team’s kill leader was junior opposite Noemie Glover with nine. She added four blocks.
- At libero, junior Faith Frame notched 10 digs to lead all players.
- Junior outside hitter Una Vajagić earned a season high in blocks with four. She also had seven kills.
Set one: ASU 25, Villanova 15
Villanova led early by as much as four at 6-2, but junior defensive specialist Piper Rama served ASU on a 7-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. That stretch saw four kills from Vajagić. There was some back and forth until a kill from Glover and solo block from graduate outside hitter Aniya Clinton put the Sun Devils up 15-10 heading into the media timeout. Following the break, those two points extended into four-straight points to get up 17-10. Arizona State was able to hold the lead, even making it a 10-point advantage by the end, winning 25-15 after a pair of Wildcat errors.
Set two: Arizona State 25, Villanova 13
The second frame started with some back and forth play before the Sun Devils scored five in a row, with four blocks in the run, to take the 10-6 lead. A 9-1 run really pushed Arizona State’s advantage up, making it 20-10 with points coming from a variety of Sun Devils. A couple more Wildcat errors sealed the win, 25-13. ASU held Villanova to a -.031 clip in this set and had 11 blocks through two sets.
Set three: ASU 25, Villanova 14
Junior middle blocker Tosia Serafinowska earned the first ace of her career as part of a 3-0 run to put ASU up 8-5. From there, the Sun Devils added to the lead with a 9-1 run that saw four more blocks, making it a double-digit lead at 17-7. Errors continued to plague the Wildcats as they had four errors towards the end of the set to get the Sun Devils to match point, 24-13. A kill from senior middle blocker Ella Lomigora completed the sweep, 25-14.
