TUCSON – Sun Devil Track and Field saw three different student-athletes take home a Big 12 Championship, as junior sprinter Jayden Davis (men’s 400m), graduate distance runner Dayton Carlson (men’s 800m) and graduate thrower Ines Lopez (women’s discus throw) each claimed a respective title on Saturday night at Drachman Stadium.
Mountain Pointe High School alumnus and Gilbert native Jayden Davis got the Sun Devils started with a triumphant win in the men’s 400m, clocking in with a time of 44.98 to earn his second Big 12 title of the season after previously winning the 400m indoor title on Feb. 28.
Casteel alumnus Dayton Carlson delivered in the men’s 800m run with a massive come-from-behind effort to pull away in the final seconds and race across the finish line with a meet-winning time of 1:46.07 to add onto an incredible outdoor season that includes two new school records in addition to a Big 12 title.
As for Ines Lopez, her distance of 58.50m (191-11) set a new career-best mark over her five-year NCAA career to become the first female Big 12 champion in program history. Lopez is now the first thrower to win a women’s discus throw conference title since Jordine van Klinken in 2022.
In addition to the three champions, the Sun Devils saw eight student-athletes, in addition to the men’s 4x400m relay team, earn a medal by placing within the top eight of their respective events.
