Colby Guy made his first start in over a year, giving ASU 5.0 innings of solid work.

HOUSTON –  No. 22 Sun Devil Baseball scored two runs in the eighth inning to rally past Houston late and take the opening game of its final regular season series, 4-3, on Thursday in Texas.

Dominic Smaldino recorded two more RBI, including the game-tying one on his double in the eighth before scoring the go-ahead run by forcing the issue on contact on a fielder’s choice. Landon Hairston became just the second Sun Devil in history to record 20 doubles and 20 homers and recorded two runs. Dean Toigo and Austen Roellig each added two hits with an RBI as well.

In his first start in over a year, Colby Guy gave ASU 5.0 solid innings of work and some much-needed length with ASU pitching out of order with the Thursday game. Guy struck out three, walked one and scattered five hits in his outing with his lone blemish coming on a two-out, two-run homer in his fifth inning of action.

Sean Fitzpatrick earned his team-leading eighth hold of the season and Derek Schaefer added his Big 12-leading eighth save of the season as well.

Turning point
Having to pitch off for a weekend due to the Thursday-Saturday series, the Sun Devils needed to find length from an unexpected source and they found it in the form of Colby Guy. Making his first start since March of last season, Guy gave length and more, limiting Houston to just two runs over his 5.0 innings of work. Guy worked at a frenzied pace, working through his five innings at an effective pace, pitching to contact and keeping his defense from being on their feet for long innings. He walked just one and struck out three with his lone blemish coming on a two-out, two-run homer in his fifth inning of work.

Big moment
After Houston took its first lead of the game on a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh to go ahead 2-0, the Sun Devils had an immediate response in the top of the eighth. Dean Toigo utilized a solid two-strike approach, choking up and lining one to opposite left field and then turning on the burners, dodging the tag at second for a leadoff hustle double. ASU had struggled with runners in scoring position all day but got another one in a pivotal moment as Dominic Smaldino recorded his second one of the game on an 0-1 pitch as he ripped a double in the gap in left center to tie the game. Smaldino moved to third on a sac bunt and came home for the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice as the shortstop skipped the ball past the catcher, making it 4-3.

Final straw
Houston put runners on the corners with two outs, prompting ASU to go to Sean Fitzpatrick out of the pen. After a first pitch ball, the Cougs attempted a straight double steal after Fitzpatrick stepped on the rubber. Instead of pitching it and balking, Fitzpatrick savvily hop-stepped off the rubber and made the throw home, easily getting the runner at the plate to get out of the inning unscathed. After a leadoff walk in the ninth put the tying run on the bases and UH bunted him over to scoring position. Derek Schaefer was unfazed as he coolly struck out the next two batters to earn his Big 12-leading eighth save of the year.

The big number
4 - The Sun Devils got four pivotal outs on the basepaths against the speedy Cougars, throwing out three runners attempting to steal a base and picking off another. The biggest of those came as Fitzpatrick handled a straight double steal with runners on the corners without balking in the eighth inning to keep the speedy Tre Broussard (25 stolen bases) from scoring the game tying run. ASU also picked Broussard off earlier in the game while throwing out Xavier Perez (14-of-16 on stolen bases as well).

Notables

  • ASU has scored multiple runs in 97 of its 174 half-innings with runs this season. ASU has 56 innings with at least three runs scored, 30 with at least four and 23 with at least five.
  • Landon Hairston extended his reached base streak to 35 consecutive games with his leadoff double. Hairston recorded a hit to leadoff a game for the 23rd time (in 52 games) - the second-highest total in the country (UT-Martin’s TJ Grines, 26).
  • With that double, Hairston became just the second player in program history to record 20 homers and 20 doubles in the same season, joining Bob Horner’s 1978 season.
  • The Sun Devils also recorded double digit hits for the 36th time this season.
  • Since sitting out to start the final game of the BYU series, Dominic Smaldino entered the weekend having recorded the 13th-most RBIs in the country (21) in that span before adding two tonight.

Inning by inning
First inning
Hairston led off the game with his 20th double of the season, becoming just the second player in ASU history to record 20 doubles and 20 homers. He would come across on a two-out Smaldino. Guy worked a smooth 1-2-3 inning with a pair of flyouts and a foul out to first.

Second inning
Roellig reached on a leadoff infield single but was out on a fielder’s choice to Myers. Myers went first to third on a Briggs single, but the Cougars turned a nice double play to get out of the jam. UH recorded a one-out seeing eye single, but Guy’s first strikeout was followed by Briggs throwing out Xavier Perez, who was 14-of-16 on stolen base attempts this season, for the final out to keep it a 1-0 lead.

Third inning
Hairston singled for his second hit of the game and went first to third on a Contrades single. Hairston scored on a Toigo sac fly that came on a home-run robbery to give ASU a 2-0 lead, but ASU could do no more damage than that. Guy worked around a leadoff single with three quick outs to keep Houston off the board.

Fourth inning
The Sun Devils went down in order. Guy worked around a two-out double with a pop-out to second to keep it a 2-0 game.

Fifth inning
ASU recorded a pair of towering fly balls, but in the end, the team went down in order. Guy issued a one-out walk, but Houston gifted Briggs with his second runner thrown out in the game. The Cougs still managed a two-out rally with a double ripped down the line and a wall-scraping homer to left to tie the game at 2-2.

Sixth inning
The Sun Devils made it nine consecutive outs after their two leadoff hits in the third, going down in order again. Taylor Penn entered the game out of the bullpen for Guy and walked the first batter he saw, but quickly picked off the speedy Tre Broussard to wipe it off the bases, and got two quick outs after that to face the minimum.

Seventh inning
Roellig beat the shift with a leadoff single through the right side. Myers popped out on a bunt, but Briggs ripped a double down the right field line to put two runners in scoring position with one out. A Zavorek strikeout led to an intentional walk of Hairston to load the bases, a move that paid off as Contrades ground out to strand them full. Houston took its first lead on a solo shot with one out.

Eighth inning
Toigo led off the eighth with a double to opposite left field that was upheld upon review. Smaldino immediately followed with another double to the left-center gap to tie the game at 3. Polk pinch hit and moved Smaldino to third on a sac bunt. Smaldino reclaimed the lead by taking home on a Roellig fielder’s choice as the throw home skipped past the catcher as Roellig advanced all the way to second on the play. McGary drew a full-count pinch hit walk to put runners on first and second and both moved into scoring position on a Briggs flyout but ASU couldn’t add any insurance.

Finn Edwards entered and picked up two outs before issuing a walk to Broussard to bring up UH home run leader Cade Climie. Broussard stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch and Houston then had runners on the corners after Climie walked. Sean Fitzpatrick came in to face the lefty cleanup batter but Houston did the work for him, attempting a straight double steal but Fitzpatrick cooly stepped off the rubber and made the throw home to easily get the out there and keep ASU on top, 4-3.

Ninth inning
Toigo notched a two-out single and Smaldino was hit by a pitch but ASU was unable to add any insurance. UH drew a leadoff walk to put the tying run on the basepath and bring Derek Schaefer in. A sac bunt moved the run into scoring position, but Schaefer was unfazed, picking up back-to-back strikeouts to end the game and earn his Big 12-leading eighth save.
