Kole Klecker pitched two innings in "relief" for the Sun Devils, striking out four.

ORLANDO – No. 19 Sun Devil Baseball struggled to find the bats in the second game of its three-game set at UCF in a 4-2 loss as the Knights forced rubber match in the second half of Sunday’s doubleheader in Orlando.

After ASU took Friday’s opener, Saturday’s game was suspended in the top of the third inning due to inclement weather all day yesterday. ASU had an efficient effort on the bump but struggled at the plate, unable to solve UCF emergency pitcher Roman Kimball.

Kole Klecker earned the “start” in Sunday’s resumption and struck out four with no runs allowed in 2.0 innings but was forced to leave the game early for precautionary measures with some minor shoulder tightness. Alex Overbay had a solid effort in his 2.0 innings of relief, the lone blemish coming on UCF’s go-ahead solo shot in the fifth inning that just skirted inside the left field foul pole.

Landon Hairston had two of ASU’s eight hits but the Sun Devils simply couldn’t find runs in the low-scoring affair.

Arizona State had the bases loaded twice in the late innings with opportunities to tie or take the lead, but the bats went 0-for-3 in those moments, scoring only one run on a sacrifice fly and leaving five runners stranded.

Turning point
It was a game of inches in the early pitchers duel and those inches benefited the Knights. With two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the fifth in a 1-1 tie, Overbay looked to have notched an inning ending strikeout but a ball was called - an inch outside of the strike zone if anything. Zak Skinner ripped the next pitch he saw down the left field line and it stayed just fair inside the foul pole - requiring a replay review to verify - a solo shot by a matter of inches that gave UCF a 2-1 lead.

Big moment
After UCF reliever/starter Kris Sosnowski was forced to leave the game with an injury after just two batters, the Sun Devils were simply unable to solve reliever Roman Kimball, who was forced into emergency action just minutes into the game. UCF’s normal midweek starter, Kimball gave the Knights 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, scattering three hits and striking out three to earn the victory.

Final straw
The Sun Devils kept within a run until the bottom of the seventh inning, where UCF ripped three one-out singles to plate an insurance run, advanced two runners on a passed ball and scored another on a sac fly. A manageable one-run deficit quickly became three and gave ASU just six outs to find a rally. ASU had a brilliant opportunity to accomplish that in the final innings, loading the bases with zero and one out in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively and managing just a single run out of those chances.

The big number
9 -
The Sun Devils stranded nine baserunners in the game and have stranded 25 total in the first two games of the series. Arizona State loaded the bases twice in the latter innings, with no outs in the eighth and one out in the ninth and managed to scratch across just a single run out of those opportunities. ASU was notably unable to keep innings alive, one of its biggest strengths in recent weeks, going just 1-for-8 with two outs.

Notables

  • ASU has scored multiple runs in 90 of its 162 half-innings with runs this season. ASU has 53 innings with at least three runs scored, 30 with at least four and 23 with at least five.
  • Landon Hairston had his hitting streak ended at 28-consecutive games after his 0-for-3 outing on Friday, capping off fifth-longest in Sun Devil school history and ending the longest active streak in the nation. He started a new streak on Sunday with a pair of hits and extended his reached base streak to 30 consecutive games in the process.
  • Nu’u Contrades extended his hit streak to 13 games thanks to a four-hit effort. He has at least one extra-base hit in 11 of the 13 games in that stretch.
  • The game was the 32nd time this season ASU recorded at least ten hits and 13th time they had 15 or more knocks. It was the most allowed by UCF to an opponent this season.
  • Beckett Zavorek is also in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak. During that span, he is 13-for-24 (.542) with two home runs, five RBIs, and 11 runs scored.

    Up next
The Sun Devils will look to secure the rubber match victory later on Sunday, with first pitch coming soon. The game will be broadcast live via ESPN+ and available over Valley airwaves on KAZG 1440 AM.

Inning by inning
First inning
Contrades reached on an error but that was the extent of ASU’s half of action. There was plenty of traffic on the basepath for the Knights right out the gates, starting with a leadoff double. That would be the only run that would come across for UCF, however, as Alba was able to get a huge strikeout with the bases loaded to limit the damage.

Second inning
Smaldino reached on a leadoff walk and Michel singled to put a pair on with no outs. A pair of strikeouts put ASU in danger of squandering the threat but Zavorek was able to leg out an infield single, forcing a tough throw that sailed into the outfield and allowing Smaldino to score from first to tie the game. Alba bounced back from the stressful first with a quick 1-2-3 inning before the game was suspended.

Third inning
Resuming Saturday’s game in the the third inning with UCF going with righty Kris Sosnowski, who was forced to leave the game with an injury after recording two quick outs. A quick flyout on the first pitch by the new pitcher ended a 1-2-3 inning for the Devils. Klecker stranded a two-out single on the bases in his first inning of “relief”.

Fourth inning
Michel drew a one-out walk and Polk poked one down the opposite right field line that was caught harmlessly at the warning track and ASU was unable to do anything with the baserunner. UCF notched a leadoff single and a one-out stolen base but Klecker stranded the runner in scoring position by striking out the side to keep it a 1-1 game.

Fifth inning
Hairston notched a one out single but that was the extent of ASU’s first inning action. The Sun Devils went to the bullpen and after Overbay got two quick outs at the top of the order, but a two-out, two-strike solo shot just inside the left field foul pole to give UCF a 2-1 advantage. UCF kept the pressure on with a seeing-eye single and a walk but Overbay stranded both with a strikeout to keep the deficit just one run.

Sixth inning
Roellig notched a leadoff single and stole second on a Smaldino strikeout to put the tying run in scoring position but a flyout followed by Roellig slipping on a pickoff attempt led to just the minimum in the frame. UCF got a one-out single that beat the infield shift and worked a two-out walk but Overbay stranded the runner at first to keep it 2-1.

Seventh inning
The bottom of the ASU order went down in order. Edwards entered from the bullpen and UCF ripped the consecutive singles to bring in a run with two runners moving into scoring position on a passed ball. A sac fly played another run as the Knights took a 4-1 advantage.

Eighth inning
ASU got a trio of leadoff singles from Hairston, Contrades and Toigo to load the bases with no outs. Roellig’s sac fly plated one of those on a sac fly but a double play on the very next pitch ended ASU’s threat. UCF got a one-out nubber infield single but Josh Butler worked an otherwise solid inning of relief - capped by Briggs throwing out the runner trying to steal second.

Ninth inning
The Sun Devils tried to mount a late rally with a one-out walk from Polk and single from pinch hitter Moutzouridis and ASU loaded the bases with that one out on a Zavorek infield single as the first baseman slipped fielding it. A pair of shallow flyouts from ASU’s most dangerous hitters Hairston and Contrades ended the threat and finalized the game.
