TEMPE – No. 16 Sun Devil Women’s Tennis swept Denver, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Tournament Friday afternoon at Whiteman Tennis Center.

Arizona State’s (20-5) victory against Denver (16-8) marks its 20th win of the season, the most by a Sun Devil team since 2001 and becomes the fourth team since 1985 to win 20 matches in a season.

Starting with doubles, graduate Vivian Ovrootsky and junior Lily Taylor won their doubles match, 6-1, then the freshman pair, Sarang Lim and Zlata Bartanusz, won 6-3, to give ASU a 1-0 lead in the match.

Returning to the lineup was junior Emilija Tverijonaite, who earned her 15th win of the spring in a swift 6-0, 6-1 result to put the Sun Devils ahead 2-0. With her win, Tverijonaite entered into a tie for third for the most singles wins in a season with Allison Bradshaw (1999) and Kori Davidson (1994) at 31. She also became the 19th Sun Devil all time to reach 75+ career singles wins, carrying a 75-26 career record.

On court six, Lim won her match without dropping a game, winning 6-0, 6-0 to put the Sun Devils ahead 3-0 for her ninth win this season. Additionally, the team won five of the six first sets over the Pioneers.

Sophomore Aiya Nupbay clinched the match, 6-3, 6-1, on court five to secure ASU’s spot in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. This is her eighth-straight singles match win, all of which have come in straight sets.

ASU will face UCLA in the second round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Tournament tomorrow at 12 p.m. MST at Whiteman Tennis Center. Tickets are available for $5 with parking available in the Whiteman lot in front of the tennis center, in lot 58 or 59.
