Six homers rally Baseball from seven-run deficit to victory at GCU

Landon Hairston completed Sun Devil Baseball's comeback with a two-run home run in the seventh inning to give Arizona State a lead it would not relinquish as the Sun Devils went on to beat GCU 12-8.

PHOENIX – No. 20 Sun Devil Baseball rode the long ball to a Herculean comeback Tuesday evening, rallying from a 7-0 deficit to a 12-8 victory over Grand Canyon at Brazell Field.

Arizona State (24-9) recorded all 12 of its runs by way of six home runs in the contest - tied for the third-most in a single game in program history. Coen Niclai had two of those, including a game-tying grand slam in the seventh inning that fully erased the 7-0 hole ASU fell into through two innings.

Landon Hairston notched his 19th home run of the season with a go-ahead two-run shot in the seventh. Dean Toigo, Dominic Smaldino and PJ Moutzouridis all pitched in with a big fly as well. Smaldino paced the office with his three hits and now has seven hits in his last 10 ABs.

Jaden Alba gave Arizona State 3.2 innings of relief work after being called into action early and was the catalyst for the comeback as he put up zeroes in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to allow the Sun Devils to claw back into the game and stay within striking distance.

Sean Fitzpatrick earned his team-leading fifth hold of the year while Alex Overbay earned his first save of the campaign.

Turning point
After the Sun Devils gave up seven runs over the first two innings, things looked grim early. It wasn’t an especially hot start for Jaden Alba either out of the bullpen as he gave up a three-run homer on the first pitch he threw in the game and allowed two singles immediately after that. Alba was able to right the ship from there, however, and retired 11 of the next 12 batters he faced to keep the game from getting truly out of hand and allowing the Sun Devil offense to pick away at the Antelope lead. Alba’s three big zeroes over the third, fourth and fifth innings proved to be pivotal to the comeback.

Big moment
The Sun Devils headed to the seventh inning in a four-run hole but made quick work of eliminating that. A Matt Polk double, Dominic Smaldino single and Garrett Michel walk loaded the bases for Coen Niclai. With a firetruck and its assembled crew enjoying the game from the top of their rig over the right field wall, the Sun Devil catcher gave them a show as took the 1-0 pitch he saw over directly over their heads for the game tying grand slam to even things at 8-8. The Sun Devils weren’t done there as Beckett Zavorek walked to bring up Landon Hairston. The hottest hitter on the planet was 0-for-4 on the night when he stepped to the plate but wasn’t planning on going 0-for-5. Hairston ripped one over the right center field wall for his 19th homer of the season - a go-ahead two-run shot to give ASU its first lead of the game.

Final straw
The Sun Devils still needed to stave off the GCU offense and did just that over the final innings. Sean Fitzpatrick gave ASU 1.0 innings of scoreless relief to earn his team-leading fifth hold of the season. PJ Moutzouridis gave ASU some much-desired insurance in the top of the ninth inning as he ripped a two-run shot over the left field wall to extend the lead to 12-8 and Alex Overbay did the rest as he earned his first save of the season in 1.2 innings of work while throwing just 10 pitches to do so.

The big number
7 -
The Sun Devils overcame a seven-run deficit for the fifth time in the Willie Bloomquist era. That tally is especially notable as the previous time ASU had overcome such a deficit prior to Bloomquist was in the 2000 season. The game marked the 12th game the Sun Devils have won under Bloomquist when trailing by at least five runs and the 23rd time over the last three-plus seasons in which it won a game while trailing by at least three runs in a game.

Notables

  • Smaldino has seven hits in his last ten ABs over the last two games, including two homers. Smaldino has eight RBIs in those two games - notable as he had just 15 RBIs ALL SEASON entering the Saturday night at Arizona.
  • ASU has scored multiple runs in 66 of its 113 half-innings with runs this season. ASU has 39 innings with at least three runs scored, 24 with at least four and 19 with at least five.
  • Landon Hairston has 50 extra base hits over his last 60 games after recording his 19th homer of the season. In his first 27 games as a Sun Devil, he had just one.
  • The game was Hairston’s ninth-straight with an extra-base hit.
  • Hairston extended his hitting streak to 16-consecutive games with the homer. It was his ninth-homer in the last nine games.
  • Hairston now has 53 RBIs - all coming as the leadoff batter in the Sun Devil lineup in 33 games. For perspective, that total would have placed him seventh in the nation for the SEASON among leadoff batters a year ago with the national leader - Murray State’s Jonathan Hogart - recording 65 total over 61 games.
  • Arizona State’s six homers were tied for the third-most in school single game history.
  • Niclai had just one homer while at Oregon last season and now has four this season with his multi-homer evening today. His five RBIs were also a career high. Niclai also had a home run in the first game against GCU a couple weeks ago as well.
  • Niclai went the opposite way with his homer, a feat ASU has excelled at this season. ASU entered the game with 11 opposite field homers - a total that was tied for 15th in the nation entering the night.
  • The Sun Devils also entered the night with a .408 average when taking the ball the other direction and ranked 17th in the nation in that category after finishing 108th nationally last season with only a .349 average when going the other way.
  • The Sun Devils have eight grand slams this season, leading the nation in the category.

    Up next
The Sun Devils turn to another midweek game, hosting UNLV on Wednesday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. AZT and the game will be streamed live via ESPN+ and also available over the local airwaves on KDUS 1060 AM. Arizona State will then remain at home, welcoming the Utah Utes for a three-game Big 12 series at Muni beginning on Friday.

Coen Niclai on being resilient and battling back

Inning by inning
First inning
After Landon Hairston struck out to start the game, PJ Moutzouridis and Austen Roellig each walked. A groundout from Dean Toigo moved both runners into scoring position, but Matt Polk struck out to end the inning.

Easton Barrett took the mound for the Sun Devils, retiring the first batter via groundout before walking the next hitter. A double off the wall in center field put both runners into scoring position, A flyout to right center allowed the Lopes to make it a 1-0 ballgame, but a groundout back to Barrett limited the damage and ended the frame.

Second inning
Dominic Smaldino led off the inning with a single to left center, and Dominic Longo worked a walk. A groundout moved both runners up 90 feet, and a walk from Beckett Zavorek loaded the bases. Hairston lined out, and Moutzouridis grounded into a fielder’s choice, leaving all three runners stranded.

A leadoff double opened the frame for GCU, and a walk capped off by a wild pitch put runners on the corners. A sac fly allowed a run to score, and a single to right scored another run, giving Grand Canyon a 3-0 lead. A single put runners on the corners, and a walk loaded the bases. A wild pitch brought in another run, prompting a pitching change. Jaden Alba was called on to limit the damage, but immediately gave up a home run, to extend the Lopes lead to 7-0. Back-to-back singles continued the nightmare for the Sun Devils, but a flyout and a groundout finally ended the inning.

Third inning
Toigo got the Sun Devils on the board with a solo home run, and after Polk walked, Smaldino crushed a two-run shot to make it a 7-3 game. Longo took a walk then stole second. A flyout to center allowed Longo to advance to third, but a groundout ended the frame.

Jaden Alba tossed a 1-2-3 inning, punctuated by a strikeout.

Fourth inning
Hairston flew out to lead off. Moutzouridis reached on an error, then Roellig fouled out to the third base side. Toigo singled up the middle to move Moutzouridis over to third, and Polk wore one off his back to load the bases. Smaldino popped out to end the inning.

Alba retired the first two hitters on a strikeout and a groundout before giving up a double to right center. A stolen base moved the runner over to third, but a groundout to second left the runner stranded.

Fifth inning
After Longo flew out to start the frame, Coen Niclai launched a solo home run to left to cut GCU’s lead to three. Beckett Zavorek singled through the left side, but Hairston grounded into a double play to end the frame, with Arizona State trailing 7-4.

Alba put up another three-up, three-down inning for the Sun Devils.

Sixth inning
The Sun Devils couldn’t get anything going in the sixth, going down in order.

Colby Guy was the next man out of the bullpen for the Sun Devils, giving up a leadoff shot to right, extending the Lopes’ lead to 8-4. A single to left center and a stolen base put a runner on second with no outs, but Guy was able to retire the next hitter on a strikeout. A groundout moved the runner to third, but Guy issued a three-pitch strikeout to close out the frame.

Seventh inning
Polk led off the frame with a double off the center field wall, and Smaldino singled him over to third. Garrett Michel, pinch hitting for Longo, worked a four-pitch walk, prompting a GCU pitching change. Niclai then launched a grand slam to deep right field to tie the game at eight. Zavorek took a four-pitch walk, and Hairston gave the Sun Devils the lead on a two-run shot to right center. Moutzouridis flew out to right and Finn Leach, who came into the game for Roellig, struck out, before Toigo walked. The Lopes made a pitching change, and Polk reached on a hit by pitch. Smaldino struck out to end the frame.

After a strikeout opened the inning, Sean Fitzpatrick came in from the bullpen, striking out the first batter he faced. A single put a runner on base, but Fitzpatrick issued a strikeout for the third out.

Eighth inning
Arizona State’s hitter went down in order in the eighth on three strikeouts.

After getting a flyout to open the frame, the Sun Devils brought in Alex Overbay from the bullpen. Overbay retired the next two hitters on two pitches, as two flyouts closed out the frame.

Ninth inning
Hairston led off with a walk, and Moutzouridis crushed a two-run shot to extend Arizona State’s lead to 12-8. Finn Leach grounded out, Toigo flew out to center, and Polk grounded out to send the game to the bottom of the ninth.

Overbay remained on the mound for the ninth, retiring the side on a flyout, popout, and groundout to secure the Sun Devil Victory.

Quotables
Head Coach Willie Bloomquist
Opening statement
“Minus the first two innings, we played really well. The first two innings, we didn't come out and set the tone very well. We obviously spotted them seven. We had a lot of opportunities to score runs in the first two innings, and again, situational hitting didn't do us any favors there, but we lived by the long ball tonight. I think every run we scored was via a home run. So I guess that's one way to win. Can't say enough about the job the bullpen did, starting with Jaden Alba coming in, obviously after the first pitch, giving up a homer, settling in after that, giving us three zeros, giving our offense a chance to inch back in that game. Colby Guy bounced back and had a nice outing, and then, of course, (Sean) Fitzpatrick. He does what he does, and (Alex) Overbay did clean it up at the end. But offensively again, early on, he was not there. We got base runners, but just kind of lost focus with guys in scoring position. Proud of the way the guys battled and stayed resilient throughout the game, able to put up enough runs to come out on top of that one. GCU always plays this tough. It’s never easy. So to come out of here with the win was a big one.”

On seeing multiple hitters come up big
“The biggest thing for me again was the resiliency, I guess, the no panic of our guys. They just kept putting together good at-bats and putting good swings on the ball. To me, that’s what was the most impressive part. Home runs are a result of good swings and good at-bats, and getting yourself in good counts and not doing too much. And I think for the most part, we did a pretty good job of that, after the second inning.”

On the ASU fans in the stands
“We had a nice following over here, which was good. They always pack the stands pretty well when we come here. And it's great to see them getting the support that they deserve with their fans showing up and being a part of it, and our fans showing up and supporting us too. So it was a fun atmosphere.”

On Colby Guy bouncing back from a tough outing over the weekend
“Just did a much better job of attacking the zone, gave up the one long ball there, but settled in and threw it pretty well. Just attacked the zone with conviction, and he's got a nice, live, quick arm, and he's throwing strikes and is tough to hit.”

Catcher Coen Niclai
On being resilient after a tough start to the game
“It's great. It just shows that we could do it. This is gonna happen later this season, and if we're able to do it here, we're able to do it while the time is important.”

On carrying the energy from tonight into the next stretch of games
“It's going to be important. We got a lot of games in a short amount of time, so just making sure we keep the energy up and stay mentally focused is gonna be a big thing.”
