PROVO, Utah – From her one-out, run-scoring single to right field in the top of the first, first-year Sun Devil Emily Schepp had her fingerprints all over No. 25/RV Arizona State’s 9-4 win over BYU on Thursday evening.
The run-scoring single not only plated Kaylee Pond from second, but it was also the first of five different innings that Arizona State scored in en route to its ninth conference win on the season.
After the Sun Devils bounced back with a two-out, game-tying single off the back of Tanya Windle in the top of the second, Schepp went on to lead off both the third and fifth innings with two-strike singles. Her fifth inning hit sparked a two-run frame that peaked with a one-out double off the left field wall by Ashleigh Mejia. The Mejia double broke a 3-3 tie.
The two-run fifth set the foundation for an eventual six-run advantage over the fifth and sixth innings after scoring four on four hits in the sixth. Two of those runs came on a Katie Chester two-run single that scored Schepp, who singled to right field following a run-scoring double by Samantha Swan.
Schepp nearly had an opportunity at becoming the first Sun Devil with a five-hit game since - at least - 2010, when records are immediately available, but was stranded on deck to end the top of the seventh. She did, however, join Kindra Hackbarth, who did so three times throughout the 2019 season, as the only Sun Devils with multiple four-hit performances during the same season.
FROM HEAD COACH MEGAN BARTLETT
“(Emily) Schepp is just a gifted hitter and truly so intentful. She knows how to hunt pitches and understands how to hunt plants and doesn’t get greedy at the plate. She’s just trying to help the ball club win any way she can. I love that kid. I’m so happy she’s a Sun Devil”
FROM JUNIOR THIRD BASEMAN EMILY SCHEPP
“I was just trying to work inside the seam, opp(osite) field. I mean, I really just wanted to execute the game plan and everything we prepped for throughout the week. I wanted to time-up the changeups and be on time for the hard stuff, too.”
GAME NOTES
- With her steal of second base in the top of the second, Tanya Windle was credited with her team-leading 10th stolen base on the season.
- Windle’s stole base extends a streak of consecutive seasons with at least one Sun Devil having successfully stolen 10-or-more bases in a single season to eight.
- Tanya Windle’s fourth-inning triple marked the first triple by a Sun Devil in a Big 12 Conference game this season.
- In fact, it was just Arizona State’s second triple in a conference game since joining the Big 12.
- The Sun Devils’ last triple in a Big 12 contest occurred on March 21, 2025, when Windle was credited with a two-out triple down the left field line – the same scenario as Thursday night’s – in the bottom of the sixth against Arizona.
- Arizona State’s eight stolen bases against BYU throughout Thursday evening’s contest marked the most stolen bases by the Sun Devils in a Big 12 game since joining the league prior to the 2025 season.
- Furthermore, the eight stolen bases against the Cougars were the most by ASU in any game since April 8, 2023, when it was credited with nine at Utah.
- With the win, Arizona State has now won 36 games throughout the 2026 season, marking the most by a Sun Devil team under fourth-year head coach Bartlett.
- By concluding Thursday evening’s contest with 14 base hits, the Arizona State offense now has 440 hits on the season, the most in a single season since the 2018 Sun Devil squad was credited with 453.
- In fact, it was just Arizona State’s second triple in a conference game since joining the Big 12.
UP NEXT
- Arizona State (36-16, 9-13) will continue its march towards not only another road conference series win, but also a potential Big 12 Tournament berth when it returns to Miller Park Complex to take on BYU (18-31, 7-15) at 5 p.m. MST / 6 p.m. MDT on Friday, May 1.
