#8 Sand Devils fall in two ranked duals

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. – No. 8 Sun Devil Beach Volleyball’s winning streak came to an end on Friday as the team fell to No. 1 UCLA (5-0) and No. 10 Cal (4-1) to start the East Meets West Invitational at the Manhattan Beach Pier. 

Arizona State is now 10-2 on the year, ending the longest winning streak in program history. ASU is now 5-2 against ranked teams this season. 

The lone Sun Devil pair to get a win today was the No. 4 duo of senior McKenna Flaherty and junior Kristin Gilmour. As a pair, they improve to 10-1. Individually, Flaherty is 11-1 on the year, the best individual record on the team. Meanwhile, Gilmour improved to 47 career wins.

Game one: No. 1 UCLA 5, No. 8 ASU 0 /// Final Box
The top-ranked Bruins (12-2) handed the Sand Devils their first loss of the season. This dual gave six Sun Devils their first losses of the season as individuals and pairs as well. UCLA was the last team to sweep ASU back on April 11, 2025.

Game two: No. 10 Cal 4, No. 8 ASU 1 /// Final Box
After the first wave, the dual was tied at 1-1 with the Bears (10-5). Flaherty and Gilmour swept their match, 21-18, 21-18, but graduate Reagan Hope and senior Daniella Kensinger on court two lost two close sets (22-20, 22-20) to drop their match. Courts three and five went to third sets, but neither was able to get the win. 

Up next
The invitational continues on Saturday with matchups against No. 9 LMU and No. 13 Hawai’i. The duals are at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. MST/PDT, respectively.
